Americans Trending Towards A Hairless Society

In just about any entertainment or celebrity magazine that you see in stores, you can hear about which celebrities forgot to shave and who was caught with their arms up. Or, in one unflattering instance, everyone was able to see the video of the celebrity who was caught waxing her upper lip before a television interview.

The media and fashion industries have been sending a clear message about trends around the country and the latest is that hair in any other place except the top of your head is not in fashion.

Laser hair removal has become so popular that the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that almost a million and a half procedures were performed in 2007 alone. According to the society's report, the number of laser hair removal treatments in the U.S. has increased 100 percent from 2002 to 2006. As laser hair removal remains one of the most popular nonsurgical treatments, clearly more and more people are permanently ridding themselves of body hair.

As the technology to remove hair permanently becomes more commonplace, an increasing number of people are taking the step to rid themselves of unwanted hair permanently, eliminating the need for shaving, waxing or covering up areas while at the same time boosting self-confidence.

America is a shaving society. From the time our forefathers banished their wigs to the continued jokes of European women, the United States has been trying to remove hair one way or another. Now more than ever, the current generation of millennials is bringing the hairless society to the forefront.

The younger generation is starting to define themselves by the hair that's missing. Metrosexuals are shaving more than just facial hairs and male chests are becoming smooth and sleek. The trend extends beyond metrosexuals. Athletes such as swimmers and runners have been known for the sleek look to increase performance during competition. Models of either gender in today's fashion magazines rarely display any visible hair on their bodies. Readers of those magazines in turn see the sleek and stylish bodies and clamor for the look of the fashion elite.

Laser hair removal centers, salons and spas are catering to this latest fashion trend with an increasing number of services. As more people seek to permanently remove hair instead of keeping up with the ongoing maintenance required for smooth hairless skin, a growing number of companies are offering lotions and treatments to remove hair.

However, the only way to permanently reduce the amount of unwanted hair is to damage the hair follicle to a point where is unable to produce hairs. The hairs that are destroyed with each treatment are destroyed permanently.
