Anti-Aging Skin Care - What Are the Functions of Skin Cells?

It reminds me of my college years writing about the functions of skin cells. I still remember vividly my biology class under our high-strung mentor a couple of years ago. Despite her whims and caprices, we still managed to pass the subject and learn something out of it.

What are the basic functions of the skin

What exactly are the functions of the skin cells? In the context of getting healthy skin, we need to expand our discussion to also the various functions of the skin in general.

The skin is the outer covering of the body. It is the largest organ of the rudimentary system. In fact, it is the largest organ in our entire body. The skin is made up of different layers of the epithelial tissues.

The skin is our first line of defense. It covers a wide array of muscle tissues and other organs. It helps protect our body from different substances, environmental factors and potentially harmful microorganisms.

The skin plays a key role in the fight against pathogens. It is also important in temperature regulation. We need a precise body temperature to keep all cellular processes normal. A minute increase or decrease in the body temperature will adversely affect different body functions. The skin achieves this because of the pores and sweat glands present on its uppermost surface, the stratum corneum.

Likewise, the skin controls water evaporation. It is primarily responsible in controlling loss of water content of the body. It also helps us eliminate various toxins and by-products through the sweat ducts. Because of this, the skin can be considered as part of the excretory system.

Notably, the skin is also the major site for vitamin D synthesis. We derive vitamin D from the sun and the skin is capable of converting the ultraviolet radiation into an essential element that is important in the development and proper growth of the bones, ligaments and ligatures. Aside from these, the skin also protects the folates of vitamin B.

Make sure you keep your skin healthy

The uppermost layer of the skin is made up of sebum and dead skin cells. This is where the skin maintains its own ecosystem composed of various microorganisms. These microorganisms are not totally harmful. Some of them aid in the maintenance of balance skin condition.

It is important, therefore, that you always keep your skin healthy. Improper hygiene will disturb the natural balance of the skin. Yeasts and bacteria may overproduce, resulting to various skin infections and conditions. These may include dermatitis, such as eczema or psoriasis, fungal infections, skin itchiness and acne, among others.

Use only all natural skin care products

You can do a lot of things in order to maintain the normal functioning of the skin. Balanced diet rich in essential micronutrients and anti-oxidants, regular exercise, sufficient water consumption and avoidance of smoking and excessive caffeine will help us maintain good skin condition.

Luckily, there are skin care products that you can use to augment some of your inadequacies. Just make sure that you are using all natural ingredients. Check if any of your skin care products contain Cynergy TK, Coenzyme Q10, Phytessence Wakame, Manuka Honey, grape seed oil, macadamia, etc. These are all essential in boosting the ability of your skin to continue regenerate. Thanks to my college professor. We did not just learn the functions of the skin, but also understood the need to keep it healthy.
