Breast Augmentation: What to Expect During Recovery

Groggy-eyed and tired, the surgery is over and you are coming out of the anesthesia. The road to recovery from your breast augmentation is just beginning and preparedness is the key to a successful recuperation.

As you wake up, you will feel a little tender and maybe nauseous, depending on the type of sedation used. Pain may not come until you get home because you will still have the medications in your system from the surgery. But, your surgeon will prescribe pain medication help with this.

The level of pain and discomfort you feel depends on the placement of your implant and the type of incision used to place it. For instance, placing the implant under the muscle tends to create more soreness in the chest. A TUBA incision- from the navel- is less invasive so it lends itself to shortened recovery time.

The nurse will supply you with ice packs, and it is extremely important to keep ice on your chest to reduce the swelling at least for a couple of days following the surgery. Your surgeon will advise you on the best plan for this.

Be prepared to care for the incision sites as well. It is possible that the surgeon will place a drain at each site in case excess fluid gathers. You will have to clear out the drains until they are removed. It is also important that you keep the incisions dry and clean so avoid lotions or perfumes. This also means no baths or showers; a washcloth rub down is what you get until the incisions are healed. Washing your hair is out too, unless you have help.

- Sleeping:

The surgical support bra and binding ace bandages add to the discomfort of the surgery. You will have to adjust your sleeping patterns to that which might not be comfortable. It is necessary to sleep in an elevated position, propped up with pillows. While uncomfortable, this helps speed along your recovery and reduces swelling.

- Exercise:

Though you should not engage in strenuous activity for several weeks, your doctor will want you to move around, do some light walking.

Depending on the placement of your implant, you can resume exercise anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks after the procedure. It is important that you follow your surgeon's advice and not try to do too much too soon. Expect to be out of work for 1 to 2 weeks.

- Sensitivity:

There may be some strange sensations in the breasts for a few weeks too. It is possible for the breast and nipple area to be either numb to sensations or hyper-sensitive to touch. Things should get back to normal in a few weeks, but there is a slight possibility that the numbness may be permanent.

- Strange Noises:

And, don't be surprised if your implants are a little noisy. Noisy? Yes .... a faint bubbling sound may occur, but this is a result of air bubbles and settling of the breast implants. This too will pass after a few weeks. A sloshing sound may also occur, this may go away or it may be a result of under-filled implants.

The most important thing is to follow all of your surgeon's instructions to the letter and if anything unusual occurs- extreme pain, high temperature, discharge or you are just uncomfortable about something- call your doctor. Your health is of the utmost importance.

Follow your surgeons guidelines and recovering from your breast augmentation should be easy and the result will be a brand new you.
