How Thin Men Should Dress - Advice on Picking Clothing From Silk Ties and More
People usually believe that fashion favors the slim, and that the waifish have a definite advantage when it comes to clothes. But if you are on the thin side of the spectrum yourself, you would know that dressing to flatter your body is not as easy as others might think. In fact, you probably face all the usual problems like ill-fitting clothes and unflattering pants that overweight people face themselves.
Of course, the most direct remedy would be to change your body. After all, being too thin is a problem that a couple of months at the gym can easily change. But if you are happy with your body with the way it is or you simply dont have time to go and lift weights regularly, changing your clothes instead of your body might be the more sensible choice.
Find the Flattering Fits
Just like with people who are relatively bulkier, the key to making your thin body look good is to get clothes that dont just fit, but fit well. That is, your clothes should hide or at least avoid underlining- the less-than-desirable traits of your body, while at the same time showing the things that ought to be shown off. Clothes that are too anything too short, too long, too baggy and the like will look downright unsightly, especially on your smaller-than-usual frame.
For example, you should take care to shun slim fitted shirts and tees the next time you go out to shop for clothes. Tops that hug the body like a second skin (or at all) will just draw attention to your scraggly midsection. In fact, they should be avoided at all costs unless you have got abs and pecs to show off to the public. Instead, opt for tops that fall exactly on your shoulders, have a bit of breathing room around the chest and then fall slightly away from your body as it goes down.
Discover the Details
As you experiment with the styling of your clothes, you will find that certain details can hide or even compensate for the less attractive aspects of your body. For example, the rear area or lack thereof is a common problem for many thinly built guys. You make your derriere look more dashing by getting pants and jeans with flaps over the rear pockets. The extra fabric adds volume to your buttock area, giving the illusion of more generous proportions to any viewer.
Do you have weak shoulders? Epaulets hose tabbed strips of fabric at the shoulders should pump your torso right up. Are your pectorals practically nonexistent? Breast pockets on military-style shirts and jackets should give your midsection an extra boost. Does your torso look somehow disproportionate to your legs? Ruches and little ruffles will give you better visual proportions, as well as a cool bohemian look.
Talk to a Tailor
As soon as you can afford it, look for a tailor who can make your best pieces of formal clothing. The fit is the one single thing that will make clothes look good on thin guys, and you cant get a better fit than the one you will get from clothes tailor-made for you. It is a good idea to get dress shirts, formal slacks, suits and sport jackets tailored so that you can get the exact specifications that will make you look better than you ever have.
