Just like seawater and air, color stone jewelry absorb light and then reflect or refract it back outside. What makes a gemstone have a unique quality is the different ways it reflects back the light. In a molecular level, these stones are fundamentally very different, as they are made of various molecular structures and mix of elements. The unique way a gemstone absorbs and reflects light is dependent upon these elemental structures, its chemical composition, and finally, how man cuts and treats the gemstone.

It is this final element which produces the commercial gemstones as we know it, plastered and installed on rings, necklaces, pendants, earrings, studs, and even gadgets. The gemologist, or the cutter, definitely adds value to a stone and influences the final price of the stone.

Here are some aspects to consider when buying a gemstone. Remember, the consumer receives the best only after careful consideration of what he/she is buying.

Clarity. Being shaped in the depths of the earth, stones naturally contain cracks and flaws due to the rough treatment it has received from underground. Most stones are formed through heat and pressure, and therefore have some imperfections scattered throughout the structure. Flaws like natural cuts and abrasions -- called inclusions -- are always examined under the microscope to determine the stone's worth. Of course, it follows that the lesser or non-existent the flaws, the greater the value. This does not seem to apply to emeralds, as the flaws somehow give the emeralds their great value.

Cut. This is the domain of the professional gemstone cutter. He has the necessary skill to bring about a cut which brings out the best in a rough gemstone. In order to make the most optimal cut, a gemstone must be symmetrical and equally proportioned to enhance its look and appeal, and to make light be distributed evenly across the gemstone structure. Color must be taken into account to, as it will determine the cut of the stone.

The shape of the cut is the next most-looked factor after color. Therefore, the final shape of a color stone jewelry is crucial to determining its overall worth.

Color. This quality is the most sought after in gemstones. As discussed before, stones absorb and reflect light. The chemical composition of the gemstone will absorb or reflect some colors of the normal light spectrum. Thus, the gemstone's color is that singular or combination of spectral light that is reflected back by the stone.

The color of a gemstone mainly influences its price. In gemology and in gemstone connoisseurship, the closer the gemstone is to a spectral color (the colors of the rainbow), the more expensive it is. The value is generally lesser when a stone has undertones of color, like when emerald green has hues of yellow, or a sapphire has hues of brown. A gemstone must have lesser earth colors (brown, white, and black, gray) for it to be more valuable.

Size. The size of the gemstone can be illusory and misleading. In the gemstone world, size is not a significant factor, but the density of a gemstone, measured in carats, determines its worth. Therefore, in a contest between rubies and emeralds with equal carats, the fiery red stone will predictably be smaller than the deep green stone, since rubies are more molecular dense than emeralds. The price of color stone jewelry, however, will still take into account the size of the stone.
