Characteristics And Quality Of Diamonds
Colour-Most of the diamonds do not have any colour, but some might have a slight coloration of yellow or brown with different degree of intensity. The absolutely transparent diamonds are known to be of the first water. The stone without any colouration with the exception of blue colour are mostly valuable. The diamonds with the slightly yellow colour are lower in the price.
The bright yellow colour has its special charm and is rather valuable. The green diamonds are rare and pricy as well, though the most problematic here is the fact that the colour is usually uneven within the whole stone. The diamonds with the brown colorations are mostly originated from the South Africa. Rose diamonds are lass rare, bright red, lilac-pink and blue are extremely rare. The stones with one of those colours usually have a "steel" shine. The bright blue diamonds are most likely among the rarest and the most expensive ones.
Clarity. Most of the rough diamonds include some foreign elements or non-crystallized carbon. Most of them cannot be seen by a human eye and one requires a magnification lens. The clarity of a diamond is defined by how few drawbacks a diamond has. The fewer the number of undesired elements, the higher is the clarity of the stone. There are several categories to distinguish the degree of clarity: starting with the diamonds of the first waters and till the so-called 'pique' group-the diamonds of the lowest quality in each one can see the inclusions without any additional tools.
Carat stands for the weight of the diamonds. For the stones of the bigger size, the clarity and the colour are the most important criteria, while for the smaller gems are mostly evaluated by the weight, not particular individual qualities. The weight of the stones is the major criteria in defining the value of the diamonds.
Carat is the unit to measure the weight of the diamonds. The word 'carat' comes from the name of the seeds of the Caribbean tree which used to be measures for the diamonds in the ancient times. 1 carat is 0,2 gram. Carat is further divided into 100 units.
The diamonds which weight up to 0,29 Carats are considered to be small, the medium size 0,3- 0,99 Carats, and big diamonds (solitaire) of 1 Carat or more. The diamonds which are bigger than 3 Carats are usually sold on the auctions.
Little diamonds which are the leftovers from the cutting of the bigger stone and which have less than 0,25 Carats are called melee. For the bigger stones of the different size the professionals used the word melange.
The price of the diamonds is defined according to the Tavernier Rule: the price of a stone is equal to the squared Carats times the basic price of 1 Carat. So a diamond of 2 Carats is 3 times more expensive than 1 Carat, and the 3 Carats is 10 times more expensive than 1 Carat. This is the system up till 5 Carats. The diamonds of 10 Carats are 100 times more expensive than 1 Carats. The diamonds of 25 or more Carats are being individually named.
