Jewelry and Charity Combine for Beautiful Results

Jewelry enhances the beauty of the wearer, while charity works to bring about a beautiful outcome for those in need. Put them together and the result is a powerful method for changing the world. Jewelry, when paired with charitable efforts, creates a winning combination that can help lead to highly successful fund raising.

Clearly one of the most popular awareness jewelry initiatives has been the fight against breast cancer. The little pink ribbon is one of the most prolific symbols in our culture today and is represented in an endless variety of jewelry. Swarovski crystals, diamonds, charms gold, silver, and more not only create a thing of beauty, but when purchased a portion of the proceeds are directed to cancer research.

This past fall, a world-renown, high-end jeweler joined with Hard Rock International in the restaurant's ninth annual breast cancer campaign. The jeweler created and donated an exclusive pink diamond encrusted pin to be auctioned during the month of October. Valued at more than $20,000 the 18K white and pink gold pin is encrusted with .64 carats of pink diamonds. It was worn to the event by Melissa Etheridge, Oscar and Grammy winning recording artist and host of the event.

Debra Messing, actress and producer of USA's The Starter Wife, recently joined the World Gold Council (WGC) in a marketing initiative, which will include a collaboration with designer Robert Lee Morris to create a piece of gold jewelry which will benefit her preferred charity, Youth AIDS. Other A-List celebrities will be invited as well to join the event, entitled "Leaves of Change." The WGC will pair celebrities with designers who will create a gold pendant necklace incorporating a leaf motif. The charitable benefit will culminate in spring 2009 with a gala event held in Los Angeles. Live and online auctions will raise funds and awareness for the celebrity's favorite charity.

While an obvious reason for combining jewelry and charity is the raising of funds for a good cause, another plus to including famous designers in fundraising efforts is that the jewelry pieces can be created for a fraction of the cost. Once donated to the cause, these pieces may represent a limited edition which in time will become collectable.

One very well known bead/bracelet jeweler has found great success in giving from the sale of its pink ribbon charm. In 2007, the jeweler donated a staggering $70,000, including a portion of the sales from its charm, to the Susan G Komen For The Cure, the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists.

The same company also continues its philanthropic work with the Angel of Hope charm, designed in sterling silver or 14K gold. Proceeds from the sale of the charm support the Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Fund. In one year alone, the jeweler donated more than $315,000 to the recovery fund.

Another arm of fundraising with jewelry is organizations that give hope and help to those in third-world countries by commissioning them to make jewelry from local, sustainable resources to be sold to American consumers. These items feature the culture's distinct styles and designs so appreciated by buyers, and the sales from the jewelry help support the indigenous people. These organizations help families purchase food, afford education for their children, and find meaningful work. One U.S. organization partners with women who may have been rescued from human trafficking or have been left widowed, to provide them an income and freedom from slavery.

There's no accident that jewelry has been successfully used to raise much-needed funds for so many worthy causes. Today's consumers not only love to own beautiful jewelry, they love knowing that their purchases and support can change the life of someone near them or very far away.
