Silver pearl jewelry combines the best of both worlds. The pearl's luster and white, creamy sheen, plus the brightness of silver, combines to form one of the most dazzling kinds of jewelry.

Types of Pearls. Cultured pearls come in different sizes and shapes, depending on the design of the culture. Sometimes they are made to shape like buttons, teardrops, pears, and oval. Yet, the round pearl remains the most popular and the most expensive.

Cultured pearls have a different structure than natural pearls as they have no concentric growth rings. Natural pearls exhibit these growth rings as the mollusk has been developing the pearl for more than the duration of cultured pearls. In addition, the cores of the two kinds of pearl differ substantially. When put under an X-ray imaging system, the natural pearl exhibits an irregular solid center, since the original irritant found in nature is most likely an irregularly-shaped organism. Cultured pearls are more intentional, and as such, they have perfectly spherical cores caused by manufactured beads.

Jewelers use these identification marks to determine natural pearls and price them accordingly.

Aside from natural pearls and cultured pearls, pearls are also classified according to the mollusk that they came from. Most of the cultured pearls nowadays come from China (most are freshwater), and Japan, from which the popular and typical Akoya pearl oysters are harvested. The black pearl comes from the black lip pearl shell which is found largely in Tahiti. The highest priced pearls come from the mollusk called the golden lip pearl shell or white lip pearl shell, which is the rarest of the pearl-producing mollusks.

Aside from the variety of shapes, pearls also come in different colors, such as black, creamy white, silver, gold, or pink. The dominant color is known as the body color. Yet, there so-called overtone colors, like a silver pearl having a yellow overtone when looked closer. The fact remains that a perfectly-rounded white pearl and black pearl still fetches the highest prices.

Silver Jewelry. Silver is one of the most expensive precious metals, along with gold, platinum, and recently, palladium. Silver-coated or pure silver jewelry is one of the most pervasive forms of jewelry circulated. Yet how do we discern the purest forms of silver, and which types are the most highly valued?

As pure silver is known to be very soft and very malleable, it is not practical at all to fashion jewelry when silver is at that form. When silver is intended to be designed for jewelry purposes, it is instead mixed with other kinds of metals to make it more durable and strong. For example, sterling silver is composed of approximately 92 percent silver and 8 percent copper. Throughout the centuries, men have tried mixing other metals with silver, but so far, they found copper to be the best complement in producing strong silver jewelry.

The amount of other metals in a silver piece is does not necessarily translate into lesser value. The silver craftsman's skill however, in making the jewelry design will imbue much more value to the jewelry and influence the price tag.

Combining these into silver pearl jewelry together is like a match made in heaven. As silver and most pearls are nearly colorless, they are a perfect complement to any jewelry design. More so if silver and silver-colored pearls are used. This combination of silver pearl jewelry will command far higher prices than their peers.
