The Charm Of The Pearls

Pearls were always considered to be symbols of purity, health and longevity. The value of pearls increases over time. The pieces with pearls will continue shine and look beautiful over many years if you follow the simple rules of how take care. You pearl necklace, earrings, pins and bracelets will give off the same warmth and perfection over many years.

How does a pearl appear? When some of a particle such as sand gets inside of an oyster, the mother of pearl will start collecting around this particle and this is the birth of a pearl. This is indeed a nature miracle. This is the only mineral which does not require another additional proceeding except for the strengthening. Nowadays, the market mostly supplies the pearls that had been cultured by the humans.

The nature pearls are very rare, it's very time and resources consuming process to collect the nature pearls. That combined rises the prices for the nature pearls above and beyond.

There are several aspects to pay attention when choosing jewellery with pearls. There are different types of the pearls. Primarily all pearls are divided into 4 major groups by their origin. There are nature pearls, cultured pearls, mabe (semi-cultured) pearls and imitation pearls. Maybe pearls are semi-spherical shaped due to being cultured on the shell. Imitation pearl is actually not the pearl per se and one should be really careful when choosing. In addition to this distinction there are saltwater and freshwater pearls. The saltwater pearls are often Akoya, Australian and Taiti.

The history of the pearls is traced deep into ancient China, as far as 3000 years ago. There are some evidences that even at that time the pearls were used as gifts to the important personalities such as ministers and their wives. It was also in China that the pearls were used for the medical and cosmetic purposes. The creme with the extracts of pearls are widely popular even in the modern cosmetics industry.
The production of the natural pearls stopped in 1952 and since then the market mainly offers the cultured pearls.

The technology to 'make' oyster to produce a pearl has been known since long ago. Even with the simple tools it is possible to slip little particles inside a shell. Then an oyster is placed back into the water where it will start the process of covering the foreign piece with the mother of pearl. The first Chinese cultured pearls were created exactly in this manner.

In medieval China the monks would place golden Buddha heads into the shells and after several time will have them covered with the nacre. Japan boasts to be the first to produce high quality cultured pearls on the more or less big scale production. It happened in 1893.

Nowadays the Chinese pearls dominate the market. China takes the lead in the mass production of the cultured pearls. This industry in China receives heavy governmental support and was able to improve the technology that ensures the highest quality of the pearls. With this China has taken the number 1 position in the market and steadily supplies the pearls of different types and at the affordable price.

The most famous Chinese pearl is Lao Tzu that was found in 1934 in the Southern Chinese Sea. The shell weighted 300 kilo and the pearl itself - 6 kilo. It resembles an urbaned head. There is a theory that it is one of the pearls cultured by the Chinese monks. There is also a legend connecting the pearl and the Lao Tzu (hence, the name) which however does not have much proof.
