Mens Fashion Tips - Choosing The Right Necktie

Matching the right necktie to a particular shirt is the waterloo of many a guy in the mornings. The task involves finding a combination of a shirt and a tie that is not too boring, but not garish or ugly at the same time. Whereas most guys would either do it through trial and error or simply ask their wives to help them, you could make your own stylish choices by just keeping a few guidelines in mind.

The Blank Canvas
Your most basic background would be the plain white shirt. It is obviously your safest and most versatile option because it is appropriate for any event and location. Even better, you can pair it with just about any tie in existence, so long as the tie will work for the events dress code. If you are not yet too confident about your shirt-and-tie matching skills, stock up on enough plain white shirts to last you a couple of months.

Working with Color
If you want to begin experimenting with color, start with a basic solid colored shirt in light shades of blue, green, red or yellow. This will serve as your first foray into using the right color combinations for pairing a tie with a shirt. For starters, you could grab a tie in the same color, only in a deeper and darker shade. Light yellow shirts, for example, can work with dark gold ties, while light pink shirts look good with maroon or scarlet ties.

A color wheel is a very handy thing to have once you start playing around with the colors in your clothes. It will help you determine if the combination you are considering will succeed theoretically. Based on the color wheel, for example, colors that are beside each other analogous colors can work well, especially in different shades. Colors that are across each other on the wheel complementary colors can also work just as well.

Pairing Patterns
Once you have gotten the hang of matching the color of your tie to that of your shirt, you may want to move on to playing with patterns. Using patterns well will require you to bring out a bit of your artistic side because you have to look at the sizes and the directions of the patterns, and then figure out which ones will look good with which.

There are two ways to work with patterns depending on how much faith you have in your matching skills. If you dont feel absolutely confident yet, the simplest method is to match a pattern with a solid. That is, a patterned shirt should go with a solid tie, and vice versa. But if you feel that you have already got the knack of matching, try pairing patterns with patterns.

Pairing patterns is actually fairly simple. All you have to do is to make sure that the patterns you use are visually distinct from each other. If you have stripes going one way on your shirt, you can have stripes on your tie, but of a different width and going in a different direction. That way, your tie and your shirt can still act as complements to one another.

It is not an exact science, this pairing thing. You will have to go through a bit of trial and error first before you find the truly foolproof combinations. Once you do, though, you will have an endless supply of colorfully stylish outfits.
