What Makes A Goth A Goth

In recent years, with fashions being categorised and people being judged on their clothes, many different companies have set up purpose built shops for the different styles of clothes. This may be on the high street or online. Gothic and other alternative clothing have become more popular with more people choosing this type of style because they want to be different.

The main colour of gothic clothing is primarily black with also red appearing on some types of clothes. Most of gothic beliefs are of darkness and it is one of the most expressional of sub cultures. For example, in art and poetry they manage to portray their feelings very well and fashion is also a key area where Goths can express themselves. This is because they love to be different from everyone else and never go for well name brands such as Nike, Lacoste or Ben Sherman, for example. Instead, they choose alternative labels that specifically develop black gothic clothing.

Because of their clothing and spiritual beliefs in darkness and misery most Goths are feared by most of the public and this is why they are hated to some point. Their beliefs are of death, sadness coupled with darkness means that some Goths look depressed and are scary looking and because they look different to the public, some are disliked.

Gothic and Punk culture was brought about in the 1970's when Britain was facing a rebellious period in society. Some people mistake the Gothic beliefs for a religion but they are simply a subculture along with Chav culture and Indie Culture. Most Gothic groups are non violent and are not a threat to people despite their looks. However, there is a small percentage of gothic groups that are self harming and believe in Satanism due to their beliefs about the Darkness and bringing it towards the light.

There are many reasons why some people turn to a gothic culture during their life and this can come down to personal preference or wanting to follow your mates. Many icons influence Gothic culture as well. For example, heavy metal bands and singers such as Marilyn Manson and Slipknot influence the way of life of Goths and sometimes push the boundaries quite far.

Apart from music, other influences include movies and books as well as poetry. Influential book writers that involve Gothic culture include Anne Rice and H.P Lovecraft who write about darkness and death in most novels. In addition, movies that have been released to the public also influence Gothic culture, and this sometimes can give false readings on Gothic people on what is right and not. Young people are also pushed towards Gothic culture with gaming. Games that feature Darkness and vampires with misfit characters can also lead young people to the Gothic way of life and influence their decisions in everyday life.

Nearly all Gothic people want to be left alone rather than be hassled and most people don't look through the clothes and see the person. Some Goths on the other hand are extreme with many body piercings and tattoos along with dog collars and chains hanging off their clothes. However, this does not mean that they are violent but gentle people whose beliefs are different but still want to lead a normal and peaceful life.

There is a great deal of gothic clothing on sale now due to the influx of Gothic stores on the internet and on the high street and Gothic culture is now among one of the most well known cultures in the world due to its heritage and history.
