How Electrolysis Permanent Hair Removal Works

Electrolysis was first employed in by Dr Charles E Michel (1833 - 1913), a St Louis, Missouri eye doctor to remove ingrown eyelashes for patients. Since then, it grew into a widespread hair removal routine amongst diverse ways of beauty enhancement.

During the electrolysis procedure, a microscopic needle will be put into the follicle and electricity is run through it. Through completely destructing the roots of the unwanted hair and keeping it from regrowth within a lengthened period of time. That time usually averages between 3 months to a year.

There are three basic types of electrolysis, namely the Galvanic, Thermolysis, and Blend methods. Although the routine is mostly the same across all 3 (i.e. by inserting a small needle into the follicle), the nature of the electric current passed across differs. Each electrolysis type is briefly described below :

(1) Galvanic Electrolysis

A DC current is passed through the inserted needle to the follicle concerned. During its travel, sodium hydroxie is generated to kill the follicle directly. This is among the earliest methods of electrolysis and is usually applied for thicker hair strands.

(2) Thermolysis Electrolysis

The electric current delivered In this case, is of a higher frequency called AC. The vibration that is genrated when the AC current is passing through heats the water molecules surrounding the follicles. That in turn destructs the hair follicle. Even though this method may be faster than Galvanic electrolysis, it is not as reliable.

(3) Blend Electrolysis

A hybrid of the Galvanic and Thermoloysis methods, the blend electrolysis runs both AC & DC currents through the needle at the same time. It results in faster and clearly more effective removal, making it a popular option for people who wants to remove facial hair.

The Advantages & Disadvantages of Electrolysis

While the time taken for successful electrolysis may vary for different people, generically the larger the treatment zone, the costlier and longer the electrolysis procedure will be. Why? Because each follicle has to be addressed individually! Here are some of its other advantages and disadvantages :

Advantages :

- Probably the only hair removal option that can really claim to get rid of hair permanently
- Have the longest record for reliability and effectiveness
- Great for small hair growth treatment zones such as the armpits, chin, upper part of the lip, stomach, around the bikini line etc.
- For most skin tones and hair types

Disadvantages :

- A well trained and skilled electrolysis is required to execute the procedure.
- Tedious. Particularly if you're dealing with a large treatment area. An approximate 15 - 30 treatments is needed for each course.
- Incorrect administration may cause hair regrowth, scarring, infection due to an unsterilised needle.
- More expensive. Treatment costs differs though an session lasting 30 minutes can cost about $60 and addresses only a small patch.
- Can be painful. Some people it results in a stinging and pricking sensation on the skin. The bad part? Every hair follicle has to experience it.

Should You Go For Electrolysis?

Well, it really depends. With the entry of laser and IPL permanent hair reduction technologies, you have many more options. You can choose electrolysis, the only process that can really claim to be a permanent hair removal option. Or select other alternatives that can also reduce your hair outgrowth in a satisfactory duration.

Your decision will be contingent on your budget versus the result you want to achieve.
