Look Refreshed With A Forehead Lift
A forehead lift or browlift is a procedure that restores a more youthful, refreshed look to the area above the eyes. The procedure corrects drooping brows and improves the horizontal lines and furrows that can make a person appear angry, sad or tired.
What does it accomplish? The muscles and tissues that cause the furrowing or drooping are removed or altered to smooth the forehead, raise the eyebrows and minimize frown lines.
What happens during the first consultation? You will meet with a surgeon and staff to review the procedure and its application to you. You are able to view before and after photos and your own before photos are taken. The surgery is scheduled and you are quoted all the fees necessary for the procedure.
How is it done? Your plastis surgeon may use the conventional surgical method, in which the incision is hidden just in the scalp. The procedure may be performed with the use of an endoscope, a viewing instrument that allows the procedure to be performed with minimal incisions.
Both techniques yield similar results, a smoother forehead skin and a more relaxed look of your forehead and brows.
What can I expect after surgery? If the forehead lift is the only procedure done, you may be able to go home that evening. If you are having more than one procedure done at the same time you will probably spend the night at the hospital.
You are sent home with pain medications that you will need to take to help relieve postoperative pain. Your head will be wrapped with gauze that will remain for the first 48 hours.
You will have swelling in the eyes and your eyes may be bruised for the next 7-10 days. The swelling will last for about 72 hours. It will be necessary for you to sleep with your head elevated to reduce this swelling and decrease the discomfort for the first 7-10 days.
You need to plan on the first 48 hours of doing minimal work. You head will be wrapped with gauze and dressing for the first 48 hours and then you will be allowed to shower and shampoo your hair. You will not have a bandage on the head after this date unless prescribed by your physician.
You will experience some postoperative discomfort but it can be relieved by the prescribed pain medication. Individuals usually plan on taking off 7-10 days from work. No aerobic workouts and increase your heart rate above 100 beats per minute for 3 weeks. Walking may begin in 2-3 days.
How many visits do I have after surgery? You will see the surgeon sometime during the first week and all sutures and staples will be removed at about 7 days. You will then return at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year post-operative. It is essential to maintain consistent follow-up care.
Am I a good candidate? During your consultation you will determine if you are a good candidate. If you are in good physical and mental health and have reasonable expectations, you would be an appropriate candidate.
What does the surgery cost? The cost quoted will include the surgeon's fee, hospital charge, anesthesia and lab fees.
How do I pay for surgery? The surgery costs are discussed with you following your visit with your surgeon. You will be given an estimate for the surgeon's fee, hospital fee and anesthesia fee.
For your convenience the fees will be paid in one sum at least two weeks in advance. Checks, money orders, cash and credit cards can be used for payment.
Are there scars? Yes. Whenever surgery is performed on your body a scar will result. The incisions are placed in areas to make the scar the least noticeable. Your physician will discuss the placement of incisions during your first visit.
Does it hurt? You will have plenty of pain medications for discomfort after surgery. Please tell us of all your drug allergies. Some pain medication may cause nausea should not be considered an allergy. All pain medication will cause drowsiness and therefore you should not drive yourself and or operate equipment.
An antibiotic is used for only a few days after your surgery. Sometimes following surgery to help decrease swelling your surgeon may prescribe Medrol dose-pack.
Will be awake during surgery? Forehead lift is best done under general anesthesia for control of pain and nausea if they develop post surgery. You will be entirely asleep for the surgery.
Where is the surgery performed? Your surgery is performed in an outpatient surgery center with no over night stay. There may be an exception that requires an over night stay in the hospital and your surgeon will decide based on the extent of your surgery required.
Are medical photographs taken? Photographs are taken after your first visit for your surgeon and then after your surgery at 2 months. Medical photographs are essential to help your surgeon better assess your face to assist in planning your surgery.
What medications should I avoid? You should avoid or be off all diet or over the counter weight medications. The only homeopathic medications are those recommended by your doctor.
It is especially important to be off St. John's Wort and Ginseng, which can cause adverse effects during anesthesia. Please stop taking all aspirin-like products, Advil, and ibuprofen as these medications can cause bleeding problems. Please tell the doctor what medications you are on ( prescription or non-prescription) to ensure the safety of any surgery.
