Rhinoplasty Can Be Your Makeover For The New Year

Perhaps no other operation in plastic surgery has a greater impact in enhancing the way you look than rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is a procedure designed to improve the shape of the nose. Even a subtle change can have a big impact on the attractiveness and balance of the face.

Primary rhinoplasty indicates that it is the first time an operation is being performed. The first operation offers the best opportunity to obtain an excellent and predictable outcome.

Seeking out a rhinoplasty specialist for this first operation significantly increases the chances of obtaining an excellent rhinoplasty result and decreases your chances of a revision.

The most important first step in a successful rhinoplasty outcome is listening to the patient and really understanding what their hopes and desires and then delivering on that expectation." A surgeons primary goal in rhinoplasty is to create a nose that enhances the attractiveness of the entire face while preserving or improving nasal function (breathing).

Each nose is unique, therefore, for each case, an individualized operative plan is developed that takes into account the patient's anatomy and cosmetic goals.

Rhinoplasty is the most technically demanding and difficult operations in plastic surgery. No other operation requires the depth and breadth of specialized rhinoplasty techniques required to handle the wide range of nasal types.

Plastic surgeons extensive experience and unique training background in otolaryngology (ent) followed by a Fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery allow surgeons to give patients the highest level of care possible. Creating noses that are attractive, natural looking and functionally safe accounts for surgeons high rate of patient satisfaction and low rate of revision surgery.

Plastic surgeons can successfully help patients with challenging tips (boxy tip, infantile, broad, ptotic nasal tip, overprojected tip, underprojected tip, over-rotated tip, under-rotated tip), nostril disproportions, traumatic noses (deviated nose, crooked nose saddle nose, fractured nose), size issues (too big, too small), skin (thick-skin nose, thin skin), and length issues (too short, too long).

The relationship between the nose and chin is often overlooked when assessing the aesthetics of the face. Many individuals with small or undersized chin are not aware how much this feature is contributing to the illusion of a larger nose. In many cases, only minor refinements of the nose is required to significantly improve the nasal aesthetics when accompanied with chin augmentation.

There are many options for chin augmentation. The most common approach is using a chin implant to obtain the desired results. This is most commonly done at the time of rhinoplasty with minimal additional recovery.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty is performed on non-Caucasian patients. Surgeons specializes on a variety of ethnicities, including the Hispanic nose, the Middle Eastern nose, the Asian nose, and the African American nose. Each ethnic group has unique features that need to be respected when performing ethnic rhinoplasty. Otherwise, the results will look unnatural and unattractive.

Revision Rhinoplasty is a special part of a plastic surgeons practice. This is a specialty within a specialty. Patients with cosmetic or functional (trouble breathing) problems following primary rhinoplasty often seek for resolution of these issues. These patients are often very emotional about there condition and often travel from around the country in hopes of correcting their nasal deformity.

Secondary rhinoplasty or revision rhinoplasty are often the most challenging cases. They require the highest level of planning, judgment and surgical expertise. Often these cases require a wide range of techniques including, reconstruction with multiple grafts and occasionally rib grafts. In certain scenarios, innovative and simple techniques can be used to correct the problem without the need for surgery.

Facial plastic surgeons will spend a significant amount of time discussing the aesthetic and functional concerns you have with your nose. Doctors will ask you very specific questions about what exactly bothers you about your nose and what your expectations are. Your history will be reviewed in detail.

A detailed and complete nasal and facial exam will be conducted in conjunction with state of the art digital imaging. Digital imaging helps establish a clear communication regarding the expectations and what can be surgically obtained. Following careful assessment and further discussion, a unique treatment plan is developed.

One to two weeks prior to the surgery, a final consultation is scheduled in order to review the surgical plan and make sure all of your questions are answered. At that point pre and post-operative instructions will be given. Rhinoplasty is typically an outpatient procedure that takes anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to perform.

The recovery time generally takes between 1-2 weeks. A splint is placed on the nose which will be removed in one week. Our patients typically do not have nasal packing, which significantly reduces post operative discomfort. Following surgery, several post-operative visits will be made during the first 2 weeks. Thereafter, you will be seen every 2-3 months during the first year and then annually.

The nose continues to look better during the first year. Surgeons believes it is important to maintain a long term relationship with all their rhinoplasty patients in order to ensure an optimal and successful outcome.

Rhinoplasty has the potential of being on of the most rewarding and high impact cosmetic procedures. The outcome of a nose job relies heavily on accurate patient selection, pre operative communication, and precise techniques required to produce naturally enhancing results that leave the face more attractive.

If you are unhappy with your rhinoplasty result or have trouble breathing as a result of rhinoplasty, please call your plastic surgeon to schedule a consultation.
