What Can I Expect From Breast Implant Surgery

Your breast implant surgery will usually only take one to two hours to complete. So what can I expect? As soon as the local or general anesthesia has been administered, the operation will begin. You can find more information about the different methods of anesthesia in the glossary.

The way in which your implant is inserted and positioned depends on what your surgeon thinks is best for you and your body. You and your surgeon will discuss this before surgery. In general, there are three places a breast implant can be inserted-in the crease where the breast meets the chest (inframammary), anywhere around the areola (periareolar), which is the dark skin surrounding the nipple, or in the armpit area (transaxillary). Implants are placed directly behind your breast tissue (subglandular) or beneath your chest muscle (submuscular).

The length and location of the scar will vary depending on the fill of the implant. These decisions will be made individually based on your tissue and desired outcome. Let your surgeon know about any concerns you have beforehand so that they may be accounted for during placement.

Depending on where your surgery takes place, you will either go home that day or spend a day or so in the hospital. After your surgery, you will probably feel tired and sore for a few days, but you should be up and around in 24 to 48 hours or less. Plan on having someone pick you up after surgery. If you have children, arrange for their care during this time.

As with any kind of operation, there are risks and potential complications from breast implant surgery.

While the majority of women do not experience these complications, you should talk to your surgeon about them, so that you understand the risks of breast implant surgery. Capsular contracture is a tightening of the capsule around the implant that causes increased firmness or changes in appearance over time.

Capsular contracture can be treated in several ways, and sometimes requires either removal or "scoring" of the scar tissue, and in some cases, the removal or replacement of the implant.

Again, as with any surgical procedure, some excess bleeding or hematoma formation is a risk. However, if the bleeding continues or is excessive, talk to your surgeon. A small percentage of women may develop infections in or around the site of the implant incision. While this may occur at any time, it's most common within the post-operative period.

Some women report that their nipples become overly sensitive, less sensitive, or even numb. You may also notice small patches of numbness near your incisions. While these symptoms are usually temporary, they may be permanent in some patients.

Sometimes, breast implants may leak. A rupture can occur as a result of injury, or even from the normal compression and movement of your breast and implant, causing the man-made shell to leak. If a saline-filled implant ruptures, the implant will deflate in a few hours and your body will absorb the salt water.

If a silicone gel-filled implant ruptures, the silicone gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket (a capsule of tissue that surrounds the implant). Because silicone gel-filled implants do not deflate like those that are saline-filled, it may not be noticeable without an MRI. For this reason, your surgeon may ask you to come in for an annual check-up. After three years, the FDA recommends that all silicone gel-filled implants be properly screened.
