Coloured Diaries, Photo Calendars And Handy Notebooks - A Step By Step Guide To Getting Organised

If like me you are of a forgetful nature you probably tried time and time again to get yourself organized and vowed never to be late or absent from important meetings ever again; all to no avail. Some people are just naturally organized and some people have to try extremely hard to organize the smallest things. There are however a few things that I have tried recently to make my life that bit more manageable and even if I do say so myself they appear to be working!

It's all about timing. Getting a grasp on your own time and managing your own time is the key. It might sound obvious but very often unorganized people are the type of people who rarely bother with a watch, never write things down and believe that just because all the information they need has been relayed to them they will never forget a thing.

From the moment we wake up to the moment we go to bed we are bombarded with information. TV, newspapers, conversations, even the casual observations we make while walking down the street, it's all information that our brain has to take in. Thinking we will remember everything is pretty naive to say the least.

Calendars - Probably the biggest time saving and organisational tool that I discovered was the calendar. Yes it's only been around for a few hundred years but I hadn't discovered how useful it could be. I've even customised the ones I have; yes I have several photo calendars. I have a large photo calendar on the wall at home that gives me an overview of the entire month. Whenever I have an engagement, appointment or important date to remember I write it on the appropriate date.

Keeping my photo calendar in this way has meant that I have remembered several birthday this year which I have completely neglected in recent years. It also means that I get to see what important dates are on the horizon, which gives me something to look forward to and helps focus the mind. Brain training, no matter how small, I've found is very helpful.

I also keep a duplicate photo calendar about my person for when I am not at home. All the important dates and appointments that I need to remember are on it. It acts as a back up or a quick way of referring to things that are still days ahead if I need to.

Keeping a diary - There are two types of diary and I use both. First I use an appointments diary which I can refer to throughout the day. In this one I include contact details like names, telephone numbers and meeting places. I also include any important details I need for any meetings, for instance if I need to bring a laptop or documents. In the same way I customised my photo calendars I have customised my diaries and they are all colour coded in accordance with how important an entry is.

The second type of diary is more personal. At the end of every day I make notes about everything that has happened during the day. It helps me to clarify details and also becomes a document I can refer to if ever I have to dig up details from the past.

Notebooks - I carry a notebook everywhere, and I mean everywhere. If someone says something important to me I make a note of it; immediately. Before I got organised I rarely wrote anything down and as a result I'm sure I missed lots of opportunities and never followed up many important leads and ideas. That doesn't happen anymore.

If these three simple things can help me get organised and take a bit more control of my life I think they could help anyone. Colour coded diaries, photo albums and notebooks are a great way to start organising your life.
