A Work from Home Business: Which Business Model Fits?

The task of finding the perfect work from home business model for you can be daunting, to say the least. There are many things to consider when looking for a home based business opportunity such as your specialized skills and strengths, your time availability, and the amount of money you have to start a home based business. What may be the most important of all is to find something you are passionate about and will enjoy being a part of.

When you make the decision to become a home based business entrepreneur, only with passion can you stay focused and not easily become swayed by the negative opinions and the challenges you will face. Remember when you have passion for what you do, success will soon follow.

A starting point in your search for a viable home based business would be to do some market research.
Some areas of research would include:

Franchises – The biggest disadvantage here is the capital required to get started. This means you may be working at it for years before you show any profits. Most franchise fees fall between the $20k – 30k range and run well past $200k or more. If you choose a work from home franchise you will likely reduce this expense. On the flip side; not having a storefront will require additional marketing to make your presence known. Depending on the franchise you may also have equipment to purchase and store, and it may require travel.

Service Based Business – Specialized training or skills are required. Some examples are coaching or consulting, beauty service, sewing service, wedding planner, cleaning, catering, dietary consultant, and home renovating service. You will likely have to develop all your own marketing materials which can be expensive and tough to make effective (copywriting is a science and art).

Your own Product or Service – To start with you will need something that has high demand and is priced competitively. Even if you feel you have the best product in the world you need to market it. The best way to do that in order to reach the largest number of people is with E-Commerce. To be the most effective you would need to develop your own website, and then work very hard to get traffic to it. This process is time consuming and costly, so your funds could run out before profits are seen.

Affiliate programs – Selling someone else's product or service online. You will have to invest money and time to market it and the developer of the product or service ends up making most of the money.

You could work for someone else – Sure if you have a computer you can get paid by the hour doing work for someone else - like typing, bookkeeping, secretarial work, etc. Your pay is limited to the number of hours you work so there is no time freedom.
