Is Your Attitude Around Selling Costing You?

What is selling?
More importantly what does selling mean to you?
Just a few years ago, I could not of imagined for the life of me, that one day I would come to understand the whole sales process and choose to embrace it, in a network marketing business opportunity.
I am confident that there are others like me, who have had a negative buying experience. Years ago the word sales conjured up in my mind, images of pushy individuals getting me to buy something that I didn't really want. It evoked fears of scams, of phony smiles, and feelings of hype, pressure, and false sincerity. Sales to me meant someone was trying to convince others and was using manipulative strategies. The whole idea of sales frequently brought up inner conflict. You get the picture...
Yet, I did know that the concept of selling is what made the economy go round; that people have and will continue to exchange currency for the goods and services they want. Entire empires and dynasties of this world have been built on sales. I also knew, that for the most part, in North America, one could never create wealth working for someone else. Deep down, I wanted to get to the heart of this concept of sales. So I chose to drop my preconceived ideas and my knowingness. I embarked on a path of reading, learning, speaking with genuine sincere professional marketers, and much to my surprise I was thrilled with what I learned.
Most people are not born sellers. Selling is an art and like other art forms it can be cultivated.
Heck, as a wife, mom, and teacher I had been selling for 24 years and never realized it. I had sold values, ideas and concepts such as:
- being a life long learner is important,
- taking care of one 's health is crucial to well-being,
- personal development is the key to going forward with your life, and so on...
Reality is that my first date and any subsequent dates were all part of the "sale" process. I was promoting who I was and my personality.
Upon further reflection, I came to realize that I didn't like to be sold but that I certainly liked to buy. I wanted my questions answered and then I would make up my own mind.
I came to appreciate people who knew their product/services and could ask me questions, in order to discover what my needs were or what was the problem that I wanted to solve with the particular product/service.
I had for far too many years, held many false and erroneous beliefs about the whole sales process.
Today, there are still some pushy sales people around, but fortunately they are diminishing in numbers. The old techniques and strategies do not serve the buyer or the seller. People are also far more educated due to the World Wide Web that provides an avalanche of information.
I had to admit that my distaste for sales was really based more on my fears of being rejected or failing, than anything else.
Today Selling to me:
- is about genuinely connecting with people
- is being an information tour guide
- is being able to communicate well with people
- is caring, listening, and solving problems
- is being able to overcome our personal doubts, fears and wants, and going out day after day with the only idea of being on purpose and serving our fellow human beings
- is necessary to building any business
- can allow you to generate more income than someone else who is locked into a fixed paycheck. Rather than begging for a raise, you can simply go out and sell more.
SELLING IS BEING ABLE TO CREATE WEALTH ANYTIME, ANYPLACE, AND ANYWHERE.
Sales and leadership go hand in hand. Leadership and personal development acquired through doing sales, will greatly improve the quality of your networking business, your marriage, family life, and relationships. In fact, lessons learned from selling are some of the best secrets to serving others as well as serving yourself financially.
I would like to suggest that if you have a dislike for the act of selling, you may want to revisit your beliefs and old programming in order to recognize where they came from.
Are your current beliefs about sales and selling serving you well or are they costing you?
It is to your advantage to develop the art of asking the right questions and to develop your listening skills. Learning and using the power of great dialogue could bring about profound changes in your life, profound economic changes as well as profound changes in relationships. This is the missing link to many people 's success.
Many articles and a ton of books have been written on the subject of sales and selling. Here are a few of my favorite resources on the subject:
