If money were not an object, what would you do? Where would you live? Would you travel? Would you drive a different vehicle? Would you be spending more time with your loved ones? Would you sleep better at night without worrying about bills? Would you fire your boss? Our dreams need not be exactly the same, but we do have one common theme: freedom! Financial freedom and time freedom are the common threads running through our dreams. More and more people, particularly women, are learning that there are opportunities for them to have it all.

The stigma attached to being a stay-at-home mom was that she did not contribute to the financial support of the household. Therefore, she was less important in the decision-making process, unable to stand alone, and perhaps even less intelligent. Of course, most people today think that the stereotype is no longer alive, but I think it is very much alive and just as painful as it was fifty years ago. There are points automatically deducted as the introductions are made and it is learned that this poor dear woman is only a housewife, just a stay-at-home mom. What, they have no college education? They have no career or even a career on hold until the baby is sent off to daycare - shocking! They are completely dependent upon their mate for support? How lazy!

I used to be in that position. I understand how it feels, the way people receive you and the feeling of not being valued, appreciated or respected. I was the recipient of being outcast from the career-centered crowd, having those women with their nails done, hair perfect, designer suits dismiss me as though I had nothing pertinent to offer. I also understand the amazing skills it takes to efficiently run a household. That woman is a top-notch organizer. She can schedule all the activities, appointments, meals, naps, baths, entertainment, carpools, meetings, etc., and get each one wherever they need to be. She can budget and create a good life, nice meals, a life without lack and perhaps even plan for the future. A good mom works incredibly hard, loves beyond reason, and is typically the anchor for the household. I understand how it feels to be that person whose talents go unnoticed and whose excellence seems so minor that it is rarely met with thanks.

Achieving an income and creating a life by design utilizes all of the skills that a homemaker already has. If you can organize your team at home, you can organize a team that will create abundance for you financially. If you are already scheduling everyone’s activities, you can manage your time wisely. If you are on the P.T.A. or fundraising for the band, the cheerleaders or the football team, you already have great people skills. If you know how to budget your home, you will easily be able to budget a business. Unfortunately, most traditional businesses do not accept our resumes. In fact, they don’t look past the lack of experience and education. The corporate world does not accept a homemaker’s skills as equal to a college education and success in their arena.

There is another industry that not only accepts us as the industrious, self-starters we are, but in fact greatly appreciates our skills and desires to assist us to become entrepreneurs, earning income from home. The integrity of a woman choosing to be at home with her children is applauded, not dismissed. The ingenuity it takes to juggle all the different hats she wears and the loyalty to her family is appreciated, respected and supported. Being able to organize and efficiently run your home is considered valuable experience and training that will enhance your journey to achieving financial freedom. Becoming a business owner is not getting a job. This is something that we must, as entrepreneurs, understand. We are self-employed which means we are taking advantage of all tax credits offered to business owners. We are responsible for our own business and no one will do it for us. We must be savvy and realize that our investment of money and time in ourselves as well as our business is investment well-placed when we plug into the system and learn how to achieve financial freedom. You do not have a boss over you requiring certain things within a particular time frame. Rather, you are your own boss creating your life by design.
