Working ones way up the career ladder takes hard work, determination and perseverance, but sometimes even these factors are not enough. It is not only our attitude towards personal development that helps us get ahead of our colleagues, but it is making sure that the people that employ us notice our skills and recognise ambition. Asking to attend a management development course not only shows a willingness to improve one's skills but also a dedication to a job role. But what exactly does management involve and what skills do you need to work on to improve your chances of promotion.

The Managerial Role
Being in a managerial role involves being able to multi task and keep the priorities of your workers at the same level as the priority of the company. It is a fine and delicate balance between working to benefit the company and understanding that the company is relying on the workers to keep the cogs turning. For a manager to gain respect, the ability to cast a positive influence throughout all the employees is essential. Leading by example is one of the easiest ways to achieve this. Management development is likely to point out that a person has to treat others the way them themselves hope to be treated. A manger that respects the employees and listens to what has to be said will inspire the same treatment back, and this will permeate through the other members of staff. A person that leads through positive influence rather than an iron fist will encourage a positive working environment.

Leadership skills really do combine many facets of a managerial style, and through taking the initiative to hone these skills through training it is possible to get noticed by those above you and get promoted to a higher position.
