How To Get A Promotion With Management Development
Working ones way up the career ladder takes hard work, determination and perseverance, but sometimes even these factors are not enough. It is not only our attitude towards personal development that helps us get ahead of our colleagues, but it is making sure that the people that employ us notice our skills and recognise ambition. Asking to attend a management development course not only shows a willingness to improve one's skills but also a dedication to a job role. But what exactly does management involve and what skills do you need to work on to improve your chances of promotion.
The Managerial Role
Being in a managerial role involves being able to multi task and keep the priorities of your workers at the same level as the priority of the company. It is a fine and delicate balance between working to benefit the company and understanding that the company is relying on the workers to keep the cogs turning. This principle applies in any industry whether it is in a factory manufacturing doughnuts or an investment bank in The City, and management development training can help either middle management or those who aspire to become a manager how to achieve this balance.
Creative Thinking
To be able to achieve the company and worker balance effectively, it is essential for those in management to be able to think outside the box. Creative thinking is a skill that can be honed and used as part of an overall approach to management that is conducive to contentment in the workplace and increased productivity from those happy workers. Being able to view situations from many points of view and come up with concepts that are abstract not only solve problems within the company, but it can also benefit ideas for company expansion, promotion and marketing.
Decision Making
A business is not going to be a success if the person at the helm is indecisive. A strong company benefits from confident decision making, and being able to demonstrate this quality is a good step in the right direction when it comes to getting a promotion. Management development training can help identify the key steps in enhancing this skill such as having a balanced analytical point of view. Emphasis also needs to be placed on communication too, especially if a decision is a controversial one. Being able to explain a decision that might provoke a volatile response takes a level of skill that not everyone possesses; a skill that is backed by many other managerial qualities.
Positive Influence
For a manager to gain respect, the ability to cast a positive influence throughout all the employees is essential. Leading by example is one of the easiest ways to achieve this. Management development is likely to point out that a person has to treat others the way them themselves hope to be treated. A manger that respects the employees and listens to what has to be said will inspire the same treatment back, and this will permeate through the other members of staff. A person that leads through positive influence rather than an iron fist will encourage a positive working environment.
Leadership skills really do combine many facets of a managerial style, and through taking the initiative to hone these skills through training it is possible to get noticed by those above you and get promoted to a higher position.
