Living In The Disinformation Age

Remember when NASA found the Rock from Mars? According to the news reports, there was no question of the validity of the claims. The rock had been blasted off Mars, and landed on Antartica where it lay on top of the ground for a million or so years before being discovered. The rock had formations that indicated that there was life around, at least at the time of the explosion.

That the rock had come from outer space was supposedly conclusively proven by the fact that it was found on top of the ground in Antartica. No information as to how it was determined to have come from Mars, or how long ago was provided, but on the basis of the discovery, Congress was persuaded to provide funding for a Mars rover project.

In reality, it is doubtful that the rock came from outerspace. Similar rocks, withe similar crystal formations are found in various places around the world. We know that a rock falling from outer space will heat to 12,000 or more degrees, causing chemical and thermodynamic changes in the rock due to the friction of air at the speed the rock would enter the atmosphere. No high temperature effects were visible in the pictures, nor were any mentioned.

At the speed of impact, some 4500 mph, the rock, like most meteorites, should have either vaporized, shattered, or buried itself in the ground. An explosion sufficient to fling a rock off Mars at escape velocity should have created a gigantis crater, visible from our landing craft, and possibly visible through telescopes. None has yet been found. Apparently, justification for billions for space exploration was wanted, so the facts were manipulated, and we footed the bill for the flight.

In another case,thirty-nine people died of unexplained causes in New Mexico in 1993. The CDC was called in and ultimately announced that the cause of the problem was the Hanta Virus. During the investigation, various possible causes were proposed, almost totally destroying the tourism industry for a couple of years, and putting several businesses related to those causes into bankruptcy.

No effort was made to compensate those businesses for the effects of the false conclusions. Numerous regulations for preventing the spread of hanta virus were passed, at great expense, to individuals in the area.

Two years later, The CDC announced that of the 39 people who had supposedly died of hanta-virus, only 13 had hanta-virus antibodies. In other words, 2/3 of the supposed victims had never been exposed to hanta-virus, and could not have died from it. Most cases of exposure to hanta virus cause only minor symptoms, and there is no way of knowing when the others had been exposed, whether just before, or years before. The regulations are still in effect.

We were told that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, but none have ever been found. Global warming is proclaimed as an absolut fact. How many of these and other supposed disasters, including the tomato debacle earlier this year are merely ways of manipulating the people to accomplish something the people would otherwise resist. Flawed and false information is reported as fact, and rarely corrected, leaving people unsure what the truth is.

It has caused me to distrust what the information we recieve. Government actions are taken, that I can only hope are based on more dependable information than what we recieve. The effects of the bailouts, and their cost may be very different than the President or Congress expects. Some of the decisions and predictions appear to be based more on hope than on facts.

So much of the information we recieve is questionable that it is difficult, if not impossible to decide what is the best course in these troubled times. In so far as is practical, one should verify all information presented before making major decisions. Even dependable sources can be given bad information.

Decisions based on bad information are rarely beneficial.
