Practice Management: Medical
It is vital to the success of any medical practice to evaluate all of their options when looking for someone to hire as the practice manager. He or she has many task to fulfill and they are all very crucial to the practice's success. The practice manager normally has some experience in administration already and would be responsible for supervising other office staff
Also, physician managers are typically thought of as mid- to high-level medical practice administrators, usually with an MBA. Not counting the clinical side of each practice, they are always responsible for everything else that goes on inside the medical practice. These tasks can be numberless, and therefore many medical practice opt to have medical practice management software or emr software installed. Even though they may be very qualified for their job, even the finest administrator typically has the need of reporting to the practice-owners.
Doctors looking to get the most qualified medical practice management these days let us know that it's harder than ever to hire the most qualified person. Many factors have contributed to the increase in competition for this position. It has become an intense field to try and land a position. Such things as practice management software is also making it hard for practice managers to find new positions because the software is able to do many of the task that humans would normally have taken much longer to do.
Even though the competition seems more intense now than it has in years past, the same type of methods have been used to try and recruit employees. Many practices still use classified advertising, but this seems to be the poorest way anyone can find a new job. Therefore, many others go through larger professional organizations. Still, others have turned to the web and it has become an important place for practices to advertise and future administrators to apply for jobs.
If you don't have all the time in the world you might want to consider hiring a good recruiter to hire the right person for your medical practice. If this is the route you choose to take, don't go hire just anyone who claims to be a good recruiter. Make sure you hire someone who has much experience in recruiting and knows what he or she is doing. Hire someone who not only knows how to recruit someone for the position, but someone who may have had some experience in practice management and therefore he or she would be someone who can be trusted when he or she recommends someone for the job. Whatever practical approach you take, the following suggestions will help you hire the best candidate.
1. You shouldn't underestimate the amount of work necessary to prepare for a new administrator, especially when hiring your first professional manager. Carefully define the job responsibilities and accountability before you start your search. Remember, as you type up a job description, make sure you remember to include all of the things that constitute a successful practice. Some research may want to be done for this before making your own job description. In fact, a lot of research needs to be done. Don't skip over this step, as it will prove to be vitally important to the practice's success. Sensibly assess your wants. Too many times, a medical office hires someone but doesn't give them the freedom they need to excel at their job.
2. Going through a stack of resumes can be discouraging. But don't give in to the temptation to compromise and settle for less than you want. Take your time. Put forth the effort required to find someone who will perform up to your standards. Settling for a candidate you're unsure about will bring nothing but misery for everyone. It can become costly when trying to find the right recruit
If you don't feel right about hiring someone, don't do it. If there is pressure from anyone, it is not recommended that you give in to that pressure. Do what you know and feel to be right. This position is not just any other position. What the practice manager does will greatly effect how successful your practice is. Someday if your practice transfers its medical records to a electronic format, the person you hire has to be a little computer savvy to know how to run them. Some software solutions even make the need for a manager minimal. For example, medical practice management software can do many of the tasks that a medical practice manager does.
And finally, remember this truism: " A successful medical practice who hires a noble practice manager has learned how to let him or her manage properly without getting in his or her way."
