Admitting that you need a break does not mean you hate your job. Every working person at some point needs to devote time to their own personal needs. It is not a reflection of your devotion to your occupation or your desire to be successful.

On the contrary, it means that in order to perform your best you need to relax, clear your head and take a mental break.

Whether it is a week-long hiatus or an extended weekend, a change in scenery can be just what the doctor ordered. Upon your return, you might feel a renewed sense of commitment and dedication to your profession and employer. It could also bring you to the realization that you must change jobs. Either way, it is an excellent stress buster!

Once you decide that you want to take a vacation you will need to decide how long that vacation will be. Will it be one week or two? Will it be a few days or perhaps a year-long sabbatical? A longer absence can also give you the time to think about pursuing a different career path altogether.

First you need to understand the reasons that you need to take a break from your job. You might want to continue with the same job, but need a break for few days, months or even years. There are some people who may want to take a break completely from their job and hook on to something more challenging.

If you have decided on an extended absence, then take the first couple of days and do absolutely nothing. Lie on the beach, read that book you've been meaning to get around to, or sleep in as long as you like. Make an appointment for a day long spa treatment or eat at your favorite restaurant.

The idea is to pamper yourself; after all, you've earned it!

If you decide that you want a job or even a career change, then you have some decisions to make. You will need to decide if you want to make an immediate change or maybe bide your time to find the right opportunity.

You could always enroll in a continuing education course. Doing so will better prepare you for a career change. Whatever you decide, take your time. You don't want to go from a bad situation to an even worse one.

Think through each possibility before deciding on a course of action. Remember: learn from your past mistakes. This is the perfect opportunity to take charge of your career. Don't squander it by making hasty decisions.

Turn Over A New Leaf

Once your vacation is over, you will want to incorporate the peace you have found into your professional life. Assuming you have used that time wisely, you will have a plan that you must now put into action. Your break will have given you the time as well as the tools needed to make positive changes.

If you decide to make a career change, then there is plenty of work that must be done. Join a professional association and begin networking with those in the industry you wish to enter. Great contacts go a long way.

If you opt to stay in your current occupation, then beefing up your skill set could make you more marketable in the future. Continue your education or get a new certification that could spell PROMOTION! This will look great to your employer as they will have the impression you are committed to their organization.

A break can really turn out to be to your benefit - look at it as an opportunity life wants to give you to enjoy.
