How Your Personal Image Can Help You Climb the Corporate Ladder

In terms of your personal life, this theory might hold well and socially, you'll probably be a great success. However, in the business world, if you have any hopes of being successful, then you may have to rethink the whole concept - you cannot afford to be yourself in the world of business, there are always certain changes that need to be made to your personal image in order to progress.

The purpose of this article is to inform you about the importance of creating a good personal image for yourself, and how in the end, personal image is the key to helping you climb that corporate ladder.

The two main factors that constitute our personal image:

-Appearance
-Attitude

Appearance

As far as our appearances are concerned, the biggest problem would be that a lot of business folks have started believing in the Hollywood, fairytale image of corporate tycoons and big wigs as people who are relaxed and laid back - people who couldn't care less about their appearances and wear loud shirts and sport piercings. This is an image that most of us would love to adopt in the real world right? But, keep in mind, no matter how much you want the world to be like this, it cant - this is no reflection of the world.

In reality, when you are out there rubbing shoulders with other businessmen and women, you need to realize that none of these people really care about your personal style statements and how it reflects you as a person - whether these people happen to be your bosses or clients. In business, your first impression is always the last impression, making it one of the most important ones. People really want to deal with someone who dresses well and looks like someone who is qualified and professional - the spitting image of that successful person they have in mind. No one wants to see someone who looks like he's come right out of the 60's hippie boom.

Suits will always be, and have always been the best articles of clothing to convey a sober yet professional message across to the others. This is the only kind of appearance that works in the world of business.

Attitude

As far as personal image in the world of business is concerned, another major adjustment that you might have to make is your attitude. Having one of those "screw you" attitudes wont get you anywhere in the corporate world because everyone you are dealing with in business is someone - and, you don't want to anger that someone, as it could have dire repercussions for your business. The last thing you want is to make your clients think that you don't care about them and their wants.

So, never be vocal when it comes to criticizing people, and always remember that you will always have hundreds of competitors in the market who are waiting to take your place and climb that corporate ladder. Always be diplomatic, and never say anything that you will regret.

There is a very fine line between being too friendly and not friendly enough. You needn't fake it entirely though - in fact, going out of your way to make a good impression for the others can be quite obvious and most people will tell you that you are trying way too hard. The key to having the perfect attitude is to find the focal between the two extremes, and once you find this point you should allow your quality and work ethics speak for you.

Always seize opportunities when they are presented to you. Never go around bragging about your accomplishments, but if you are asked about them, don't ever shy away from giving details about your various achievements in the business. Going up the corporate ladder means that you are constantly aware of where you stand, what your next step is going to be, and who can give you a push upwards or pull you down.
