Should You Backup Data Yourself or Hire A Company to Do So?

Tags: , , ,

Once a person decides to backup his data, many issues arise such as the backup medium to be used, the software to be used, whether to hire a company or manage the backup oneself, if a company then which one etc. The choice thus, can be quite confusing. Here are a few guidelines pertaining to one of those issues viz. whether to hire a company to manage your backup or do it yourself?
For this, let us have a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of each of the methods and draw a comparison with one another.

Comparison between Backup by a Company and Manual Backup of Data

The main advantage of backing up your data yourself is that it is inexpensive when compared to hiring a data backup company. Thus, many times such backup is preferred by those companies that operate on a limited budget.

On the other hand, the primary advantage of hiring a data backup firm is that they handle the entire process themselves without you having to worry about it. After choosing the firm, minimal efforts are needed on your part such as choosing the particular data that needs to be backed up.

But, one should not imagine that by choosing a firm reduces any of your initial efforts. Probably on has to put in as much effort in choosing the right software, backup medium etc. as in choosing a data backup company where you have to do some research regarding the various plans they offer, the medium they use, their reputation etc.

The next factor is the time involved in backup of data. When you hire a firm for the purpose, you would save a large amount of time. Especially if you make use of services such as remote backup that would automatically backup your data in the background.

But, nowadays software is also available that performs much of these tasks. Examples of these are portable hard drives that come with inbuilt software that backs up all the data that has been modified once the hard drive is connected to the computer. Similar software can be used to backup data onto servers but that increases the cost of the backup to a great extent. You will have to manage the server as well. Thus, by making use of such services, you save some amount of time.

On the other hand, some doubts have been raised about the above-mentioned software as they may slow your computer down to a great extent thus; stalling the other work you may be performing then.

With the data backup firms, there is always the possibility of losing the backed up data or having to pay more for its retention if the firm goes bankrupt or changes ownership.

Another issue is that of the safety of your data. If by chance, you happen to choose an unethical firm to backup your data, there is a possibility of your data landing into wrong hands. This proves to be disastrous if the data is sensitive in nature.

One of the advantages of handling the data backup yourself is that you get to choose the method that is used to organise the data. Thus, you can improve the accessibility to your data in case you need to restore a part of it. But, in case the volume of data that you handle is high, it gets difficult to manage.

If the volume of data that you need to backup is low, there are some online services that are available that provide free backup of data on remote servers.

Finally, in case you are an inexperienced user, your choice of data backup medium may prove to be incorrect and thus, make your backups insecure and cause problems later if data loss occurs.

From the above points it can be seen that hiring a professional firm proves to be more advantageous than managing the data backup yourself. But, it proves to be expensive and thus cannot be afforded by all.

Thus, the choice among the two should depend primarily on the budget that you have in mind, the volume of data one handles and if one is capable of handling it by himself, and the importance of data that you backup. While choosing either among the two, one should make the necessary research regarding the service to ensure safety of your data.
