Highly Durable SDLT Tape

MRC-head technology in SDLT format comprises of small magneto resistive heads. They MR heads form a cluster as they are packed densely and closely together. Thin film mechanism is used to join together the clustered MR heads. MRC heads offer more transfer rate and recording capacity when compared to the equal sized magneto resistive heads. MRC heads offer high efficiency of wafer usage at low cost. MRC heads provide more resistance to the SDLT tape format against environmental influences such as humidity, temperature etc. Transfer speed & performance of SDLT format are elevated by the multiple heads.

Magneto resistive cluster heads are assimilated into the pivoting optical servo as LGMR enabler. LGMR technology’s core enabler is the pivoting optical servo (POS) that is a blend of magnetic & optical technologies. Pivoting optical servo system is optically assisted that integrates lazer servo guiding with read/write magnetic recording of high density. The unique design of POS supports the application of high duty-cycle. Pivoting optical servo is very much low sensitive to the influences from outside. Therefore the system of SDLT is capable of achieving track account along with increase in the magnitude’s order over the other existing DLT backup tape products. Convenience for the users is increased and the manufacturing cost of SDLT tape format decreases as the need to pre-format the tape is eradicated by the POS system. Capacity is lost in other traditional techniques of magneto servo while in SDLT format, the consumers get about 10% to 20% more recording capacity.

Optical-servo is used on the unused backside of Super Digital Linear tape media so 100% of recording surface of SDLT tape is used for recording data. In traditional magnetic tapes the front portion of the tape media is reserved for the processes of servo. Lazer of optical tracking follows along the SDLT media’s backside during the movement of tape media through the pivoting optical servo (POS). Therefore as a result the implanted optical targets are tracked. Assembly of POS hinges roundabout a single rising point. This helps to align the writs/read heads with optical tracks while writing or reading data to the SDLT tape.

PRML-encoding was included in the technology of hard drive in order to control the correction of errors. Now PRML is also used in the backup tape formats for controlling the error corrections. PRML technology in the Super-DLT tape format assists to increase LGMR technology’s performance & capacity and enables to produce tape drives that give high output with increased efficiency. Lucent Technologies and Quantum collaboratively developed the efficient PRML channel that is utilized in the LGMR technology. Recording densities provided by the PRML are very efficient (97%). PRML assists to increase the pace of data transfer, output and capacity of SDLT tape technology. SDLT drives whose base is LGMR technology will utilize the Partial Response Maximum Likelihood from its 1st version through the compatible product’s whole roadmap. SDLT tape products provide unparalleled performance, stability and durability that allow the enterprises to carry out efficient data backup operations at low cost. Minimum recording capacity of SDLT-1 tape format is 160GB (native) and that of the SDLT-II tape format is 300GB. The compressed capacities of the SDLT1 tape and SDLTII tape versions are 300GB and 600GB respectively.
