Global ITplayers engage in 3D
Dear Reader,
There is a lot of indication that the 3D Web is coming now with great pace. Virtual Worlds come closer more and more to reality and empower new kinds of applications. The pace setter of such success is the games industry that pushes the limits from game to game. As powerful enough hardware for 3D is in the hands of the consumer today many global players of the IT sector seem to be willing to take part in the trend towards sophisticated 3D technologies as they probably do not want to let go this promising market to Adobe's flash alone. Intel (new GPU and CPU processor Larrabee), Microsoft (Silverlight already with 3D effects), Google with its new O3D format for the web, Adobe (flash with 3D effects) and IBM partnering with Second Life have taken more than baby steps already in 3D in 2009 and will intensify most likely their commitment in 2010. In addition consortia try to set standards for the 3D Web now, e.g. the Web3D consortium has produced within a decade the robust ISO standard X3D that is the only XML based ISO standard up to date. Also the Khronos consortium has announced that they will work on a low level recommendation to be supported by browser makers until next year.
Please see a slide summarizing this situation at the link below (also attached).

Recently Bitmanagement Software has released a new version of their 3D renderer BS Contact 7./a2 Web 3D based on the X3D standard as their 18th release in more than 15 years of continuous development. It is a cross browser plug-in enriched with 25 new features:

These new features such as post processing and dynamic shadows can level up Bitmanagement's visualization software for the web in terms of quality only reached previously in state-of the art computer games on DVD.
Serious applications with photorealistic appearance and latest computer graphics, e.g. in architecture can be tested online with walkthroughs. As an example indoor scene please see the links below
