Uses of External Hard Disks
As the name indicates, an external hard disk is the hard drive that is placed outside the computer, in a distinct enclosure that might also contain a cooling fan. The user stores all the requisite data in this component which is connected to the personal computer (pc) by a high speed interface cable that enables to and fro data transmission. The most common interfaces used are USB and Fire Wire. Any pc that’s equipped with a Firewire or USB port will recognise the device and assign it a designating letter. This data storage device is popularly accepted, for it is stated to have many advantages.
Advantages of Using an External Hard Disk
In majority of the households, a single pc is utilised by all the family members. Multiple users might damage the sensitive documents stored in the computer. In such a situation, it is the external hard disk which proves to be the right option. All important information can be stored in this exterior device which can be safely placed for protection. This simple plug and play device can also be carried and used either at home, office or at a colleague’s house. Once a pc recognises it, the drive can be accessed like any internal hard disk.
The internal hard drives in computers are filled with important information for official data keeps ever increasing. Even the hard disk in the home pc gets filled with downloaded songs and games, photographs (that occupy much storage space), important health records, financial information, etc. Failure of the hard disk would turn the entire data irretrievable. Diverse external hard drives offer adequate protection against such circumstances. One drive can be used for financial information, the other for photographs, and one for data backup of important information and so on.
A wide variety of external hard drives are available. The design of some is sleek while some are so small that they might be sized as your palm. Using the device is easy and no extra power adapter is required for the disk is powered solely by the user's computer.
External hard drives have all the advantages, and are ideal data backup devices. However, a few inherent disadvantages have proved inconvenient for users.
Disadvantages of External Hard Drives
These have been recently developed and manufacturers of the drive have provided only the windows device drives for them.
Another disadvantage of using an external hard drive is that when placed off-site, they have to be stored in proper and secure conditions; otherwise they might get damaged by environmental conditions or stolen by disgruntled employees.
It is an ideal data backup storage device, but taking a full data backup of the entire hard disk is time-consuming and cumbersome. Moreover, it is an effective data backup device only if it is stored off-site. Carrying the disk off-site every night is difficult.
Remote access of data from external hard drive is possible only if it is plugged in through the local network and shared.
The external hard disk might require its own power source for it fails to draw sufficient power from the USB or Fire Wire connection at times.
Finally, this data storage media is prone to lose data for all the very same reasons that cause data loss in the internal hard drives.
Data Loss from External Hard Drives
Data loss from an external hard drive can occur due to plentiful of reasons. They are vulnerable to loss of information by all the conditions that affect internal hard drives, and they are also susceptible to degradation by environmental conditions. Information turns inaccessible, if the media is kept improperly stored. Heat, sunlight, humidity, oxygen, dust, or liquid spills lead to data loss.
Another major form of information loss occurs due to mishandling. They get cracked when dropped and physically damaged drives lose their data.
Data loss can also occur when the drive gets corrupted by virus, worms, etc.
External hard disks have turned popular for the obvious reason that the inherent advantages have surpassed the few disadvantages. The reduction in its prices has further enhanced its acceptance.
