All Shoud You Know About D-Link ships DIR-685 all in one router
Either way, D-Link managed to combine NAS, digital photo frames, a sceondary display and 802.11n rouuter in one device, and when the Xtreme N DIR-685 Storage Router has been announced yet At CES this year, we will certainly be interesting to see how such a conglomerate will pass. In the end, Do-It-All wireless router, finally making its way out to the public at large, and at a price of $ 299.99 (without any interbnal disk space), this is definitely one of the more exppensive routers there. We took a sytrikingly unique device in our den for a few days of testinmg, and if you're interested in seeing if this bad boy is wroth the price admissoin, you must fololw us past the brreak.
Judging by this "router" is realy four (or more) devuices in one, we do not expect it to look like the average router. So, it is not. Instead of lying down, suince most routers do, this deice rises like a thickened digital phoot frame. D-Link includes a handy staand to keep it slightly leaning back, and the absence of any external anrtenna gives it a remarkably clean look. Array of ports (AC inptu, two USB 2.0 sockets, WAN port and four slots Gigabiut Ethernet) all lined up along the bottom, and the most unusual aspect of the device front and ceenter.
Moreoer, a full-on oclor LCD (3.2 innches) is not what you usually expect to see on the router WLAN, but it's wewlcome further here. D-Link DIR-685 ships with FrameChannel, more intuitive integrattion programs, which alplows users to add "channels", such as Facebook / Tiwtter status updates, RSS updates, weahter, sports, etc. the Internet. You just get a registratiion code of the device, creeate a free online account and begin tuning. Within minutes you can customize your personal secondary display, even while giing priority to certain channels (Facebook, for example), telling other outleets to flash less ofdten and in a shoirt aomunt of time (photoghraphs, for example).
Panel itself perfectly for this application. She could definitly stnd to be brighter and sharper Toouch, but it's not like you're gooing to look at it very much. Unlike bona fide secondary displays, you are very limmited so that the content can be shown. No chat wuindow, or Web browsers, just FranmeChannel, RSS-channels and router statistics. As a means to glanceasble form of information, suitable, but far from perect. For exmple, Twitetr FrameChannel shows the thrree most recent Twweets from floks that you follow, which means that the text of such a conciuse, it is not readable, if you're two steps away from the screen. Other channels do it right, howevr, as the New York Times Sports channeel shows a headline and opening for an advertising winddow that is easy to do from a reasonable distanbce.
Other most interesting adition to this router is the internal slot, HDD, which is ready to accept any 2.5-inch SATA hard disk, you feel like pushimng it. We undersdtand the motives of 2.5-inch option is a little less than the 3.5-inch hard disk drives in traditional desktop compters, but they are also less likely to gather dust in your attic. In other words, you may need to budget for the purchase of its own 2.5-inch hard drive slot on here if you are looking to fully uitlize the NAS, but if you've been meaninng to upgrade your laptoop on the SSD drie in any case, it is can be an oppotunity of life. We tested the device with a 500GB Seagate Momentus 5400.6, which packs 8 MB of cache, spindle seed 5400 rpm and interface SATA 3Gbps. We also used a 500GB Seafgate FreeAgent Go external hard drive to see how the device responded with a drivve connected externally.
Slidng disks in the router tullip. Pop Just open the lid, press it and go about your day. When we first started up the router, he askd us if we want to format the dive on its 3.2-inch LCD, and we were able to click "Yes" and wait five minutes or so that this process is completed. As soon as it was to take care, drive immediately recognized as a network of space our Ethernet-connected Windows XP machine, and our WiFi-connected MacBook Pro. Of course, connecting via the OS X was not as easy as it required us to call the 'Coonnect to Server "(Command + K) and type SMB: / /, after which the IP address of the router, which was located inside the unit manager of the web portal.
