Protective Coating Technology Of Maxell DDS Tape Format

The introduction of the DAT-72 tape format has boosted the DDS 4mm format and has provided an affordable and reliable backup media solution that offers user friendly, backward compatible and convenient path to the DDS users for upgrading to high capacity and high speed backup solution. DAT72 is the fifth version of the DDS tape technology. The DAT-72 tape cartridge has space to hold compressed information of 72 GB which is 18 times more than the DDS-1 tape technology.

4mm cartridge is the heart of the DDS tape format. Maxell has been the first for the last few decades to market the data tape products of next generation. Improvements and advancements have been made over the five versions of the DDS format. Advancement of Digital Data Storage Media and the development in the coating technology (metal particle) are closely associated.

Today the media of metal particle dominates the DDS media. The metal particle media was developed by the DDS media as sustainable tool for high density DDS tape format. Therefore, the leading media of DDS market is the MP media. The other tape media formats SDLT, DLT, IBM Magstar and LTO depend on the formulations of Metal Particle for durability and high density recording. Before the introduction of the MP media, the tape formulations of chrome & ferric oxide were used mostly. MP media was introduced to meet the need of high density tape media that was the demand of the 4mm tape technology for compensation of backup tape cartridge’s small form factor. The DDS 4mm tape cartridge was break through technology that enabled 3.5 inch factor to have recording capacities of multi Gigabytes. The length of the tape used by the DDS-1 tape technology was 90 meters. So in this way DDS-1 had available tape of less than fifty square feet for data recording.

At that time the tape cartridges (quarter inch) offered only 1/4th of the recording space as DDS1 cartridge. But inside the tape cartridge, it could pack more than 5 times the physical area for data recording. Metal particle media’s physical properties were attractive and ideal to fulfill the needs of helical recording mechanism of DDS. MP media had double the remnant flux and coercivity as that of the substitute media pigments. Therefore, metal particle media has more potential and ability to achieve high density recordings when compared to cartridge format of half inch or the quarter inch. The magnetic output of the MP media in DDS was also higher. Particles of pure metal are used in the formulations of metal particle, which make it more sensitive and vulnerable to oxidation. The tape’s recording layer and the data on it is destroyed if the media of MP is oxidized. Passivation material is used to coat the metal particles utilized in the DDS tape media to avoid the problems of oxidation.

Metal particle of Maxell DDS tape have coating of “ceramic armor” that protects the tape against corrosion & oxidation and maintains high output signals. The stability of the metal particles is maintained for longer period of time with the technology of ceramic armor. The protective layer of ceramic armor localizes the energy of the metal particles effectively. The other benefits of the protective layer are that it increases the robustness and gives superb resistance against heat. Therefore the Maxell DDS is reliable, tough and efficient tape technology.
