Resilient SDLT Data Tape Format By Sony

In DLT tape technology, the process of recording data onto the tape reel is called “serpentine”. In this recording method, the tracks are in sequence onto which the data is recorded. These tracks run back and forth alternately along the SDLT data tape reel. The helical mechanism is used by other tape formats for recording purpose. In this method, the media moves back physically at the beginning when it logically reaches the tape’s end. Media resides on single tape reel. The reel is drawn within the case of the tape cartridge. In the tape drive there is a take up reel onto which the tape reel is looped around. Digital Linear Tape is very durable and tough backup storage medium in the storage market of mid to high end. Dust and dirt and human errors can affect the performance of the tape media. So it is very important that the backup tape medium should be protected from these dangerous threats.

The Sony SDLT-1 has large capacity of 320 GB (compressed) and its performance is not affected even after passes of 1 million. Sony SDLT1 is the next version of the Digital Linear Tape format and is the ideal backup medium for businesses of medium & small size. It has more speed and space to hold information. Sony SDLT is incredibly stable and durable. When SDLT-320 tape drive is used, the Sony SDLT tape cartridge can record compressed 320GB data at speed of 32 MB/sec (compressed). It keeps the valuable data secure and safe for time period of more than thirty years, and the performance of its media is stable and outstanding after even 1 million passes. The innovative cartridge design of Sony SDLT-1 improves the tape’s stability in the Super DLT tape drives and its resistance is also enhanced against repeated unloading & loading.

The tracking density of the Sony SDLT is excellent and it has the new innovative system of optical servo. This system has been designed and added to get superior tracking accuracy and exceptional tracking density. Its error rate is extremely low. The tape technology of Sony SDLT is ultra thin & smooth. The thin layer helps to minimize the rate of errors while the smooth tape increases the capacity for recording more data volumes. Sony SDLT offers migration path for further extension in future. It is compatible with its older versions and provides continuing enhancements in capacity of data recording. So this platform of backup data storage can be used in long term with confidence. The magnetic coating on the Sony SDLT tape consists of sub micron particles that are uniform which stable the density recording and enhance the signal output.

There is a MRC (Magneto-Resistive-Cluster) head in the Sony SDLT tape format that provides superior recording density. The tape surface of the Super DLT is smoother. The track density of the SDLT is higher than the DLT-IV and its tracking is more accurate which is very important for high density data recording. The POS is an innovative feature of the Sony SDLT with which the recording area is not wasted for signals of servo. So the POS feature helps to create a high storage SDLT tape cartridge. The previous grooves on the tape’s backside are traced by optical head and the position of the head on the track is adjusted in synchronization with the fed back information to the head. The optical head utilized by the POS is non-contact help the surface of tape to avoid damage.
