Superior Maxell LTO Tape Generations

The Maxell LTO ultrium tapes offer recording capacity range from 100GB to 800GB (native). All four generations of LTO are offered by Maxell whose compressed capacities range from 200GB to 1.6TB. LTO format was introduced by IBM, HP and Quantum. Its open specification enables cross-vendor compatibility. Maxell LTO is the ideal and economical backup storage technology. According to the roadmap of LTO ultrium, each new LTO tape version is introduced after 18-24 months with twice the recoding capacity from its prior generation. The LTO specification also ensures backward compatibility with previous LTO versions.

LTO tape drive has the ability to read information from the current version LTO tape media and also form the media of previous two generations. While on the other hand, the LTO drive can write data onto media of the previous and current generation LTO data tapes. The LTO tape drive uses the previous generation's data format for reading and recording information onto the tape cartridges of previous generation. LTO ultrium is a high capacity backup medium. In late 2004, the fifth and sixth generations of LTO ultrium tape were included in the LTO roadmap. The LTO-6 tape will feature capacity of 3.2TB.

The family of Maxell LTO tapes ranges over first generation through fourth generation. All versions of Maxell LTO backup tapes are highly robust and economical. The native capacity of Maxell LTO-1 tape is 100 GB and that of the Maxell LTO4 tape is 800GB. Their transfer rates range from 20 MB/s to 120 MB/s. Ceramic Armor Particles technique is featured in all the Maxell LTO tape versions.

Pure iron particles are used in Maxell ultrium tapes. Ceramic layer is used to coat these particles which protect them from oxidation. This coating layer is very ultra fine (10 millionths of a millimeter). Minimum thickness of ceramic layer is ensured in the Maxell LTO tapes. The iron particles' magnetic energy is also retained in the Maxell LTO media.

Differently colored packaging is used for different generations of Maxell ultrium tape cartridges. In this way the customers can easily identify them. The storage life of Maxell ultrium cartridges is more than thirty years. LTO tape drive has the ability to read information from the current version LTO tape media and also form the media of previous two generations. WORM cartridges and non-WORM tape cartridges are available in the Maxell LTO-3 and LTO-4 formats. 4K memory chip is employed in Maxell tapes that hold the historical usage records.

Unique CM (Cartridge Memory) analyzer has been introduced in the Maxell LTO cartridges. Cartridge Memory can be connected to the Windows machine through USB. The recorded information from the memory chip of LTO cartridge is read by the CM analyzer. The CM Analyzer reports metrics such as cartridge age, number of media loads, error percentage of records and detailed information regarding last four uses of Maxell LTO ultrium cartridge.

CM Analyzer saves the scanned information. These memory contents can be appended and saved to any prior scans for the Maxell LTO tape. As a result the complete history of each Maxell LTO cartridge can be stored. This information helps in indication of overall health of the Maxell tape. Maxell uses reliable and efficient technologies in all Maxell LTO tape versions.
