Tough and Durable HP Ultrium LTO Technology
HP LTO goes beyond the standard of industry as they have to go through the testing phase under harsh and extreme conditions. The HP LTO cartridges are subjected to severe temperature testing, drop testing and prolonged life testing. HP ultrium tape products are used by the enterprises all over the world as they are performing the backup operations effectively with minimum and also securing their investments. LTO ultrium tape consists of single reel that has all the technologies, functions and attributes of the previous backup tapes with open tape format standard. In LTO compliant tape drive, the LTO reel is linked with another internal second reel in order to get backup solution with enormous recording capacity and robustness.
LTO is form of magnetic tape that was introduced as substitute to the DLT backup tape format. IBM, Seagate and HP jointly introduced the LTO tape technology. Standard name of the LTO tape format is “ultrium”. DLT tape of Quantum and AIT tape of Sony were the leading options of the enterprises for backup storage medium for UNIX systems & PC servers in the late last decade of the 20th century. Both these backup tape formats are tightly controlled and monitored by Quantum and Sony.
Seagate, Hewlett-Packard and IBM countered this by the introduction and development of open data tape format. LTO data tape technology is perfect and idyllic for automated and standalone systems and for those enterprise that have to restore, backup and archive information in huge quantities. LTO technology provides to its customers enormous data recording space with 800GB in LTO-4 tape format which is the fourth version of LTO.
Research & development is being done on the upcoming next two generations LTO-5 and the LTO-6 whose capacity is planned to reach 6.4 TB with high transfer speed of 120 MB/second. The users can access the data rapidly with the help of the memory chip of 4KB that is embedded in the cartridges of LTO1, LTO-2 & LTO3. The LTO4 tape cartridge’s memory chip is doubled from the previous versions to 8KB. Third and the fourth version of the LTO tape technology (LTO3 & LTO4) have the WORM functionality which guarantees the protection and security of the company’s critical and valuable information from any incident of data loss, unauthorized or misuse of information. This feature differentiates the LTO tape format from the others and makes it more efficient and advantageous backup tape solution.
Bulk packaging of LTO is also available that is especially designed for the users of library. Their cases are made transparent so that information of the barcode could be identified easily. Separate cells are made in the cases so that each of the LTO tape cartridge could be kept separate which prevents them from any kind of damage during their movement and transportation. HP LTO1 tape format’s compressed capacity on a single cartridge reaches 200GB and the transfer speed is also very high. LTO storage media from HP offers the safest, ideal and most reliable solution for the protection and storage of valuable data. The fifth and the sixth generation of the LTO tape format will be available to the customers in the future that will provide more opportunities to its customers to store more amount of information in lesser space and at lower cost with high performance.
