Choosing A Book To Read

Choosing a book to read depends on the mood or the time of the day. It also depends on the time factor, whether you have five minutes to spare or an hour. The type of book you select often has a lot to do with this. There are people who can finish a book in two days, as they love reading. There are others who make an attempt to read and take a little longer. For various reasons, they choose a particular type of book they would like to read.

You also think of reading a book when you are traveling or before going to bed. These are the two times we are completely relaxed and can make this time fruitful. Our concentration will depend on the type of book we like to read. Reading is such an activity that one must enjoy it and not do it grudgingly.

If you are an intellectual or the studious type, you will prefer books on technical knowledge, business, shares, engineering etc. But if you love romance, there is no dearth of books for you. For the last hundreds of years, romance and mystery books have been most widely written. For subject of need or fancy, there are different books available. There is such a vast choice that sometimes it gets very tough to select. Be smart, but keep on reading.

When it comes to children there is a wide range from story books (of their favorite characters like Snow White), to drawing and coloring books, bedtime stories, adventures (Secret Seven, I loved them, when I was young), crosswords, gaming books and of course their school books which are essential and part of their curriculum. How can we forget the dictionary and the atlas! These are two most important books for kids in school. Books, believe me, are needed, even though we might be in the computer age. They have a magic and use of their own.

There are books on how to improve in Business and IT learning, books on general education, books on special education for retarded children and Braille books for the blind. It is because courageous people like Helen Keller pushed for Braille books for the blind, that they came into existence. A book for a blind person is like a pair of eyes. How can we ever measure its value. People in noble professions like doctors etc. study and get their knowledge from books. Imagine what would be our state, if people before us had not authored books out of their experiences, so that we could learn.

Study books are structured in such a way so as to help people to be professionals like doctors, teachers etc. They initiate you to become "somebody" in life. And this is because someone, somewhere, took the initiative to put these valuable pieces of information and learning in books for us to learn and become something in life. That is why young people can aspire to become great doctors someday, referring to these precious books.

Reading books of any kind is not only interesting, but also help us spiritually to open our minds to God, to change our attitudes, to broaden our outlook on life and also increase our vocabulary. As long as books are around, we can never stop learning. Someone once said, 'there is no age when man stops learning'. He is a learner, till he goes to his grave. And according to me, his tutor and teacher is the BOOK.

Books are wonderful in making a magic and yet a very real environment. Those who speak to us through them are more intimate and have more influence over us than our living companions. "Tell me what you read," observed Goethe, "and I will tell you what you are." Because our experience is so limited and because books interpret the experiences of thousands of years, we naturally learn most from them.
