A College Admissions Story Worth Mentioning

Let me fill you in on an ongoing story about a kid named Gary. Gary is just your average high school senior. He enjoys playing sports and taking long walks on the beach. For that reason, he doesn't usually spend a great amount of time on his school work, but he still has pretty average grades. Knowing that he is just an average student, with an average SAT score, he is a little worried about what college he can be accepted to, and what college he will enjoy studying at. He wants to find a college that will allow him to fulfill his career choice, but really wants to find information on each college in order to make a good choice. Knowing that on the internet he can find pretty much anything, he starts out there.

He decides that he is going to start off with an associate's degree in general education. He looks at a few college towns across the nation and happily realizes that there are universities in each of them. He feels that he is wasting a lot of time since it takes forever for him to find each college admissions application and then print them off. He decides that if he only applies to about 10-15 colleges, that should give him plenty of insurance on being accepting into at least one of them. He fills one out. He gets all his information in all the blanks, writes a check for the admissions fees and seals it up in an envelope.

He proceeds to the next one. The information is very similar to the last application, but he presses on. The next application is almost a carbon copy of the previous one. This experience is similar to getting bounced around to different doctors and having to fill out your history of long medical problems over and over and over again. This is not what Gary wants to do.

He knows there must be an easier way. He goes back to searching on the net.

He returns to the college webpages and realizes that he can just type in all of his personal info right on the site. Soon he realizes, however, that his computer typing skills aren't much better than his handwriting skills. His typing skills are not everything they are cracked up to be. He wishes there was just one site where he could submit all of his information once, and send that to all of the college admissions officers around the nation.

Google comes up on his internet home page. He types in find a college and some other phrases. He can't seem to find anything that pleases him. He looks at many different webpages but nothing fits his need. He figures he might need to be more specific to a college so he types in Dartmouth College Admissions and Yale Admissions because both of his smart buddies applied and got accepted there. He thinks maybe they knew something that he didn't. (Besides being more intellectual than him). He wants something more. He wonders why he can't find some kind of tool or something that will allow him to apply to any college he wants with a few clicks of the mouse.

"How can I find that?" he thinks. "What search would get me something like that?"

He is about to throw in the towel. Even though he knows just what he needs, locating it has become tedious. Usually Gary never spends this much time on any problem he has. He has been spending many hours trying to find any information and is completely discouraged and distraught. He changes his mind about college. Instead of taking the time to fill in every online application, Gary just gives up with the internet and just sends in the two applications that he already filled out on paper.

Two weeks go by and he has not heard from either college. A month. Two months. He is graduating tomorrow and that day gets the letters he has been waiting for. He can not wait to find out which one he got into. He opens the letter from a state university first and reads that they regret to inform him that with his information, he has not been accepted. He shrugs it off and opens the one from his 1st choice in colleges. He is shocked to read that he has not been accepted to this one either.

His mom had told him earlier that if he didn't get accepted into college before the night of his graduation, then she would kick him out of the house. As Gary walks down the isle for his graduation he looks at his mom with a heartbreaking look on his face. She already knew what he was going to tell her. Sure enough, Gary gets kicked out and sent on his merry way. He is forced to get a job at McDrivein's, where he spends the next ten years. If only he could have found something that would have gotten his name out to more colleges so he could have gotten an education.
