The university is the pioneer in adopting newer technology. The University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory was the one which taught the world’s first computing course in 1953. The building, which accommodates the laboratory, was also partly funded by Bill Gates.

The university would also celebrate its 800th anniversary in 2009. It has launched its ‘800th Anniversary Campaign’, aiming to raise £1 billion by 2012. Even before launching the campaign, the university managed to collect £300 million.

The UK government is the major contributor to the teaching and research works in the university. It has been estimated that around one-third of Cambridge’s total income is being funded by the government. The remaining money for running the university efficiently comes from other research grants. The endowment income alone is calculated to be more than six per cent of the total income. The total financial endowment of the University of Cambridge was estimated to be 4.1 billion and that is the largest endowment collection in Europe.

It has various research and development departments and teaching faculties in various academic disciplines. There is a general opinion that the Cambridge shows a bias towards the science-related subjects. However, it also has a number of social science and humanities faculties which are contributing extremely well to their specific fields. The departments of the university conduct a large number of lectures and research-related works in various colleges affiliated to it, for which the staffs of the said colleges should supervise the participation of the students in various extracurricular activities and also the academic-related programmes.
