Three Common Problems When Writing A Thesis And How To Fix Them

The process of writing a thesis can be a tough task, particularly if you have no experience of doing such a project. Typically you will be expected to write over ten thousand words on a subject on your choice that requires some form of original research.

Inevitably you will need the support and guidance of your tutor in helping you to choose the right topics, what to research and how to formulate a structure to the work. However there will be other areas that you may encounter problems with that help may not be immediately accessible. Read on to find out about three of the main problems and how you can solve them quickly.

Problem One: Writer's Block

This is an extremely common problem and can cause a lot of stress for even the most accomplished of writers. It seems that no matter what you do, the process of writing coherent and thoughtful sentences does not seem to materialize. Perhaps the easiest way to defeat this problem is to just get something down.

It does not necessarily have to be the best and most thought provoking sentence you can think of, but it may just be the most important as it will get you writing once more. For some writers it helps to change some of your habits. So, for example if you normally type on a computer, why not try to write on paper instead. Perhaps changing your environment may also have a beneficial effect on your work. The good news is that writer's block does not last and before too long you will find yourself writing productively again.

Problem Two: Procrastination

Perhaps the biggest problem that any student suffers from when it comes to writing long and detailed reports is procrastination. Long periods of inactivity and repeated excuses not to do the work are all signs that you need to need to address the problem. Quite simply put, procrastination will kill your grade if you do not act quickly.

So what is the best way to stop it? The reason why people procrastinate is because they become bored with the task of writing a long report. As a whole the idea of writing ten or twenty pages just seems like too much. Therefore it can help it you break down the project into smaller more manageable sections. Set small work periods of one or two hours and then stop for the day. By doing this the task will appear much easier and possibly more enjoyable.

Problem Three: Tutor Does Not Help Me

It may seem surprising but a common issue for students when writing their thesis is that they find that their allocated tutor does not help them with the project. Problems can be caused by many issues, but the tutor not being motivated by the topic or they are not easily available for support are some of the most common causes for concern. Fortunately there are some things that you can do improve the situation.

In these circumstances you can insist on the help of the tutor. It is your thesis and you are paying for it so it is also your right to ask for assistance when you need it. You need to make this clear to them so that know exactly what it is that you expect. Express clearly that if they are unable to do this, then you need to find a suitable replacement that will.
