Instilling Good Study Habits
Our children are not born with the natural love for studying. Even school doesn't specifically teach study habits; it is our duty to help them to develop their love for learning.
They will be successful not only in school but in life if we develop our children's good study habits. Psychologists said that children will grow responsible whey they become an adult when they learn good study habits at an early age. So the best thing to do is to help them learn how to love studying. Helping our kids gain not just academic success, but more importantly, discipline and a passion for learning is essential.
Children must have their schedule or study time. Make this as early as infancy and it should be carried throughout the early years to make your child fully learn the value of time such as having meal time, nap time, play time, exercise, cleaning up, and bedtime. And when they reach 3-4 years old you can now include their study time, such as time to read, write and make activities of play.
The parents need to establish a regular time for every activity done regularly so that the kids will fall into a pattern at home. The parents also must know or ask their children what is the best for them to do first like some kids love to read or write first before they will eat their meal; others eat first before study. It all depends on your child's mood. It is also healthy for the children that they are also included in making decision.
Children must know their routine. The child should know that it is expected for him to do homework immediately after supper before he can watch television or can do other things. It is better to give a schedule for them to do their homework rather than doing it anytime. Because sometimes children tend to forget. And if ever there is no home work make them read their past lesson or study in advance to make their schedule for studying still not wasted.
It is better for a child to have a study room or a quite place to do his homework. Make you child decide on where he will study in the house. As long as it has no distractions like TV computer etc., and is in an accessible place where you can monitor your children.
Make a specific direction; this will teach your child to set goals in every work that he will do. Whenever he reaches his goal acknowledge him or give him praise for the job well done. Helping your child set his goals is making him become focused.
As they grow older you may also want to help them develop other learning styles.
Children work according to their own unique style. We must discover how they do it. Children learn in different ways; there are kids who learn in participating and performing skills such as note taking and writing down information. Other kids prefer to listen to verbal instruction and so on. When the kids complain that they do not understand a certain concept, suggest another approach.
Encourage your child in every step he takes. Not every child is a great student, but this does not stop you from letting your child know that you are proud of him. Encourage him more often because kids really love to be praised and because you encourage them and praise them, they are inspired to do more.
