Spring Is In The Air
You only have to open up the yellow pages to find reams of advertising for cleaning services. There simply isn't enough hours in a day any more to do the usual stuff. Long gone are the days when a woman's time was taken up with cleaning her house and children from the moment she woke to the moment she fell asleep - thank goodness.
However, we now have a complete reversal. It used to be only the rich and famous that could afford to bring in cleaning services but it has become a relatively normal thing for families to have a 'lady that does'.
This is because often both parents have to work to keep the family in the manner they have become accustomed and this leaves a deficit in the time for cleaning the home. So, in comes cleaning services.
Of course, this is not a bad thing for everybody but I have to confess, while I can't afford to have a 'lady that does', I do miss having the time for a proper spring clean. I don't care how advanced we get, how much technology and how many distractions there are in our lives, there is something unique about that feeling when you know you have been through your house from top to bottom and you have peace of mind that every nook and cranny is clean and fresh.
Spring cleaning has its roots deeply entrenched in history. Jewish people clean their houses in a religious ritual the day before their Passover celebrations in order to remove anything seen as unclean for the duration. This would occur around March or April every year.
Right back as far as the Persians, a ritual spring clean was noted. Nouroz is the New Year celebration which occurs at the onset of Spring and this is the time of year when an thorough house clean would happen. With other religious origins, Eastern Orthodox Churches had their followers conduct a week long cleaning of their homes either before or during the first week of Lent.
It can be no accident that all these different groups of people, as well as your average housewife, thinks that thorough cleaning in the spring is a good idea. Spring has always been a traditional time of new beginnings, even more so than the start of the Christian New Year calendar.
It is, in fact, the most sensible time of year for cleaning of this magnitude. The long, dark days of a cold winter have passed and there is more light to show up the dust. There is also the fact that the weather is warmer and it's easier to dry things like curtains and bedding that have been cleaned.
If you're ever in any doubt - ask the tax man. He sure things this is the best time of year for a good clear out. He clears out your wallet and your bank account!
So, Christmas is upon us and New Year resolutions will still be broken. Valentines is just ahead for the few that are still loved up and the rest of us can look forward to spring approaching. It may not seem such a wonderful task, sitting in the dark coldness of a winters day and considering clearing your house out and cleaning it but look at it a different way.
Spring is just around the corner - a time of new beginnings, of new life and a fresh, clean, crisp smell is in the air. You will shed off the winter dreariness like a snake skin and feel renewed and ready for a summer of open windows and long, lazy days. Begin this either by bringing in cleaning services to kick start you or take a few days and do it yourself - either way you will be ready for the rest of the year.
