Alternative Energy Development to Help the Earth

Alternative energy development is an area of interest with the current environmental issues. Understanding alternative energy sources has led to continuing search for further options. There are many different forms in which alternative energy are available ranging from solar energy to to hydroelectric to geothermal and others as mentioned in this article.

Firstly, despite all the problems with fossil fuels, this plant is not without many other ways to produce power from what are termed 'alternative energy' sources. Most people immediately think of solar energy which utilises photovoltaic cells to capture energy from the sun and fortunately these cells are becoming more affordable. There aren't any areas where solar power cannot be utilised including: generating electricity and hot water plus of course it has the added benefit of being pollution free.

However, much more work still needs to be done in order for us to economically harness the sun's energy. Since solar energy cannot be used during the evening and on gloomy days, provisions on the resource is unavoidable that is why backups in the form of storage batteries are utilized.

In recent years there has been a great deal of interest in 'wind farms' which are being set up around the world normally through private finance. These are huge windmills with two but more often three blades which harness the power of the wind to generate electricity for many communities. The power of the wind has been known about and used for centuries but now they are being used purely for the generation of power.

With the growing developments in our technology and everything that we use, it is so unlikely for us not to use the more sophisticated modern wind turbines as an alternative to the old theme being used. Just like any other methods, using the wind energy has its own hitch such as having to worry what to utilize if ever the days are calm and still. Needless to say, during these times the electric company kicks in for powering your home or office but wind energy is not altogether independent.

Another more reliable source of alternative energy is the use of hydroelectric power plants and these (usually very large) plants can produce huge amounts of power. The concept of hydroelectricity is simple - using vast amounts of water and gravity to turn electricity producing turbines. The use of water for driving hydroelectric turbines is not much of a worry even finding for its sources because water is just everywhere. Having said that, building huge dams is very expensive, time consuming and there are other issues which usually make the whole process costly at the beginning. To generate the needed power, the flow of water must be adequately controlled and the most often used process is the building of dams. Finding a suitable location for these dams usually requires changes to the local (often a wide region) area and they often come under fire from environmentalists concerned about the impact on wildlife.

To provide the electrical needs of a city or other heavily populated area, certainly a dam is quite essential otherwise, one should settle for something less than that of the dam. Some businesses and communities use a run-of-the-river hydroelectric converter which is suitable for their power needs but without the problems associated with large dams.

However, the most underused and under-rated form of energy is geo-thermal: this is the heat which is generated inside the planet beneath the crust. The earth's inner molten core is the one responsible for transferring the heat into the water. A number of different methods are used to harness this 'free' power which is drawn up into power plants. The whole process is designed to utilise the steam that is produced once the superheated water reaches the surface. It is in the USA where this technology has become world famous with 'the Geysers' dry steam power plant not that far from San Francisco.

Alternative energy development will continue to climb in importance and priority as the world and people realise and feel the direct impact on their lives with the changing and unpredictable climate conditions today.
