Responsible Garden Irrigation Doesn't Have To Be Hard Work

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. For some of us there isn't a day goes by when we don't think, I wish I'd done that differently or if only I'd known that before. Most times it's just idle speculation or wishful thinking but occasionally it takes on a more weighty importance, as is the case when it comes to water. For years, as a society, we have taken one of our most precious resources for granted at great expense to the environment. It's only now that we are able to look back in horror at the way we once acted and change our behaviour accordingly.

Perhaps because water, like the air we breathe, has for so long been a commodity we take for granted; so much so that many don't regard it as a commodity all, that we have used and abused it in the way we have. If not for the fact that water is part of an ongoing eco cycle we'd have run out of it a long time ago! Thankfully that's not going to happen but with an increased population and the cost of getting water to those people on the rise we've had to face up to some important home truths, not least of all the facts about garden irrigation.

There was a time when we didn't give much thought to garden irrigation, in fact it was taken for granted to such an extent that many people would reel out a length of hose and just turn on the water and leave it running until they remembered to turn it off again; sometimes that could be many hours later, such waste! The only time people ever had to give extra thought to garden irrigation was during a particularly warm and dry summer like that experienced in 1976 when a nationwide hosepipe ban was issued. How well that ban was followed is open to debate but for many it was no more than advice as they could not understand why water should be scarce.

We've come a long way since then though, and today there are many clever devices and technological improvements that have been put to good use in the area of garden irrigation. Watering systems are now no longer just a length of hose they can be sophisticated pieces of equipment that are designed to get maximum usage of any water with minimum waste. The idea seems simple, it is, and the results are plain to see in the amount of money a person can save on their water bills as a result of installing a modern garden irrigation system.

Underground Irrigation - For a hassle free garden irrigation system you have to look no further than an underground irrigation system. Some people are put off because of the idea of digging up a precious garden to install the system, but it is well worth the effort and the amount of digging is comparable to a day's gardening so it should not be enough to put most people off.

Underground garden irrigation systems offer a discreet watering solution that is flexible and easy to use. It can incorporate sprinklers, which are perfect for a small garden area, or turbine sprinklers for much larger areas. Whatever size garden you have there is an underground garden irrigation system out there that can do the job and save you money.

Rainwater Harvesting - One of the best ways to minimise water wastage while not having to compromise your garden irrigation habits is through rainwater harvesting. Like all areas of garden irrigation it has improved greatly in recent years and there are now different sizes of water butt available that can also be connected to pumps, hoses and sprinklers to create a totally self sufficient garden irrigation system.

Dominic,

Great message, and at a time when people need to think about being responsible with water. The secret I have discovered is usin drip tappes, laid on the soil and buried under 2" to 4" of organinc mulch. This reduces my water usage by about 75%. I have a page describing and showing this type of garden irrigation system at http://www.gardening-coaches.com/how-to-install-a-garden-irrigation-system.php
