3 Classic Toys That Make Great Gifts

Many of the latest and greatest toys are sold simply because they have great advertising. The toy itself is often easily broken and will pass into the realm of ancient history once the fad has passed on or a new movie is released with bigger, brighter, and better characters. Some toys, though, especially gifts, can last for the duration of a childhood. Some can even last longer. Certain classic toys will never lose their appeal, and while they may require some investment, they will last a lifetime.

Not only do these classic toys make great gifts, they can be used as the foundation for a collection of heirlooms that will be passed on from generation to generation within your family. As the decades pass, each generation can add to the collection creating something of value to leave for those who will come after you. If you have something from your childhood that is important to you, make sure you are setting up your kids with the opportunities to have those same kinds of memories.

Toy Trains

A wooden toy train set is one such gift. Unlike its plastic contemporaries, the hardwood pieces of track are not easily broken and the train engine and cars can be fine works of art. This toy will last a long time, and even if you pulled a train that was fifty years old out of box, a child living in 2007 would be able to spend all day playing with the set. When things are built well, modern improvements aren’t always necessary. If you started out by buying your child some sections of track and one car, then you could make the gift something to be anticipated by purchasing additional track and cars for other occasions. In this way, the collection could slowly grow into something that your child could be proud of.

Rocking Horse

Kids love toys that you can ride on. Before the advent of automated kiddy cars and battery-powered gyro swings there were rocking horses. Made with care in a workshop, a rocking horse was a toy that was a staple in every playroom. It made regular appearances under the Christmas tree and at birthday parties. This classic toy can still be a favorite. No matter what the circumstance, a rocking horse is a toy that scores at both ends of the spectrum. It is durable, classic, and can become an heirloom piece that is passed on from generation to generation.

Rag Doll

These dolls may not cry, use the potty, or bat their eyelashes, but you can count on the fact that rag dolls never go out of style. The soft, plush features of rag dolls have made them a favorite of little girls for generations. While some are meant to be dragged around by the arm as little girl’s constant companion, others are designed as collectors pieces and can be worth a small fortune. You may use this opportunity to help your child begin to build a collection that she can take care of and pass on someday.
