Basic Instinct At It's Purest
There are many theories surrounding the basic need in us to continue the human race. Much of it stems from the theory of caveman 'oh, see woman, need to spread genes and dominate'. On the female side, apparently we use ancient methods of sniffing out a 'manly aroma' to find the one that's going to protect and procreate. Caveman beliefs are just one reason to explain this insane urge most of us get at some point in our lives to continue breeding but it doesn't half manifest itself in some odd ways that nobody can deny!
Men may have this instinct to continue their family name, or do what is expected of them, or prove their manliness - very few of them would just admit to feeling that surge when they see a cute baby and no man would ever admit to feeling that surge when they simply see or smell new baby clothes.
In this respect, women are the simpler creatures. We can happily admit to turning to mush over the newborn baby clothes that look like they would only fit a doll. This urge is in girls from a very young age. We grow up playing with dolls - and playing with cars in the name of feminism - but most of us girlies love the dolls. We baby them, dress them up, care for them and take our responsibilities towards that doll very seriously.
Early on, girls are well aware of their reproductive system gearing up for that first baby and god forbid we should know anyone older who has a baby while we are still young! We will instinctively mother that baby and the hormones are already raging!
Once we are in a position to seriously think about having babies all sense goes out of the window. We can spend absolutely ages pouring over catalogues of baby clothes - even this is enough to get our juices flowing. We gaze adoringly in every pram we pass like something possessed. We even stare at pregnant mums in a stalker style mode!
As we are planning our family and/or trying for a baby, we practically live in shops full of baby clothes. We gaze, we coo over them, we touch them, hold them up to inspect the size and we sniff them. Yes guys, we sniff them.
There is a smell to baby clothes that is in no other garment. You can pick up a new top in a designer store and it won't invoke that same hormonal feeling of needing to procreate the same as baby clothes would even though they may have been made in the same place. So, maybe it's a psychological thing but there is a definite 'thing' about the smell of baby clothes that just does it for us.
You will find men in Mothercare, most of them looking bored, but most doing their duty of providing for the needs of their baby. Most of these men won't understand the need to smell baby clothes and will recoil when asked to. Let your lady do her thing because your baby will appreciate it. Your baby will have all the other things that make life fun instead of just the practical things because that smell will induce a baby spending spree that will ensure you baby gets all it needs.
Oh go on, it won't last! Once that baby is here, the smell of the nappies far outweighs the smell of the baby clothes and the impulse to continue spending will wane - trust me - I'm a woman!
