Baby Clothes: Top Five Criteria

The following article is full advice on things that parents should consider as they try to pick out clothes for a new baby.

Comfortable
The number one criteria for baby clothes should always be comfort. When you shop for baby clothes, especially infant clothing, make sure that you take the weather into account so that your baby is warm in the winter and comfortably cool in the summer. Choose clothes made of soft, cotton fabrics rather than stiffer materials and watch out for thick seams on the inside that can be itchy and uncomfortable against their skin. Baby clothes should also be roomy enough to facilitate movement and physical development. But, if they are too big they may actually hinder activities like crawling and walking.

Clearance
Babies grow very quickly so it doesn't take long for them to outgrow their clothes. This means that you will probably need to replace old outfits every couple of months. If you don't take advantage of clearance items, keeping up with a growing baby can be a little expensive. Consequently, it helps to plan ahead. If your baby is only an infant, but 9-month and toddler outfits are on sale, buy the bigger sizes ahead of time because it will save you money in the long run. After all, your baby is going to need those clothes before too long.

Clean
Try to wash new clothes at least once before you put them on your baby. Washing not only makes them softer, but it gets rid of any germs that come from being handled by some many shoppers in the stores.

Cute
If possible, it is nice to find cute outfits as well. Obviously, no parent will be looking for or buying ugly clothes if they can help it, but most clothes end up in the closet just because they are functional and affordable. Sometimes cute clothes are a little more expensive, but they can still be worth the investment. To fathers, who think that cute clothes are a pointless waste of money because babies don't care about the things that they wear, I would point out that the baby doesn't care, but the mother probably does. She will be caring for, cleaning up after and dressing that baby all day every day, and a cute outfit every now and then can do a lot to help keep her sane.

Quantity
In closing, I would just like to give you some advice on how many clothes to have on hand. If you haven't had a baby before, you will quickly learn that they can go through several different outfits in the course of one day; especially as infants. Diaper blowouts and spit-up are probably the most common reasons for changing clothes when they are infants, while baby food spills and constant drooling become an issue as they get a little older and start to grow their teeth. Either way, you need to have enough clothes in the house to keep up with the messes without having to wait for outfits to go through the laundry. For infants, you can never have too many onesies. They are comfortable, easy to change and good by themselves or with other layers. They can also be bought in packs of three or five.
