Take simple steps to protect your child from brain injury.

Brain injury happens every day to innocent children. The effects can change a child’s life catastrophically in a flash. How can you protect and guard against your child being injured by a brain injury.

First of all simple falls are the number one cause of brain injury for young children under five years of age. Children are curious by nature. As children mature – their horizons and ability to climb and move quickly increase. The higher the fall the greater the distance for speed of the child falling increases. The type of landing surface also plays a big factor in the extent of the brain injures. A child falling on soft grass will not generally not sustain the same extent and seriousness of injuries as if he fell on hard concrete. It is most important to watch and guard children under 10 years of age from damaging falls. During a fall, a child’s brain is at special risk because of the size and weight of her or his head in relation to their body.

Infants also are at greater risk of falls from simple changing tables, cribs and other standard pieces of furniture. Toddlers and school age children are predominantly at risk for falls from windows, balconies, porches, stairs and even playground equipment.

It can be safely said that children between the ages of 5 and 14 experience 45 % of fall related injuries at home and approximately ½ of that (23 %) at school.

How can you prevent these falls for your children and the children in your neighborhood. It all comes down to common sense. First of all make it a rule to never leave infants unattended on changing tables or other furniture where there is a danger of falling. Remember it can happen in a flash. The effects can last the lifetime of the child.

What the child could not do in locomotion last week they may be a speed demon at it today. Children by their very nature are more than inquisitive.

It is wisest to choose baby walkers on wheels. Use alternative products when in stationary activity centers – such as your local park or Mc Donald’s restaurants.

Purchase and use safety gates at the top of bottom of stairs. Be vigilant that these gates are being used and closed and are not there just as reassurance for you.

It always comes down to the question how much of supervision is adequate and how much is domineering. The role of education and teaching or simple habits of safety cannot be overemphasized. Although you may think that you can supervise your child 24 hours a day it is unlikely that you will be able to. Be vigilant in your supervision. Also teach your children simple basic facts of safety. How to prevent falls. That falls are not only fun they can be deadly and dangerous. And if the kid climb the tree teach them both how to safely climb, never to take foolish chances and how to land on their feet properly.
