The Framework Of A Healthy Life
With all the hype in the press recently regarding the health of the nation, we see that many of our children are facing a lifetime of problems associated with obesity. This is due to several contributory factors including the popularity of computer games, which means that children spend a great deal of time sat on a sofa entertaining themselves with games consoles. Add to this the amount of time spent watching TV and it all adds up to a lot of time sat on their ever widening posteriors.
Lifestyles of families have changed drastically over the last generation and it seems that time passes all too quickly when it is crammed with what we feel we have to do every day from working to keeping house to organising and socialising. All this means that we lose sight of the simple things in life, such as a walk in the park with the children, kicking up leaves in the woods on an Autumn day and kicking a football around in the park on a Sunday afternoon.
So we have it - the sedentary lifestyle. Of course, many of us remember the days when, as youngsters, we could disappear all day and find fun things to do at the park or fields or woods. Imaginary games made our minds thrive and although there was an element of awareness about strangers, it didn't cripple our fun the way it does to youngsters today. This is more down to frequent reporting rather than an increase in the danger but it puts parent off from letting their children roam around and play freely. This is another issue that contributes to the widening girth of the next generation of heart disease waiting to happen.
So, what can we do to help? Well, for a start we could encourage more activity at home. Anyone that has a garden can fit in a climbing frame. All children love climbing frames. They pose challenges both physically and mentally, challenges that need to be overcome because those obstacles on the climbing frame will remain unconquered until solutions have been found.
It is quite a marvel to watch children of all ages on a climbing frame as, initially, you will see them facing problems that mean they can't reach the top or they don't know how to physically negotiate it. After a few seconds thought, they will certainly try and certainly make mistakes, but just as certainly they will eventually achieve their goal.
Many adults are beginning to voice concern that children do not know how to lose with dignity these days. Even sports days at schools have become too soft with a prizes for all attitude. So, if a child doesn't know what it feels like to fail, what on earth will spur them on to achieve more? Failing is a way of learning how to be better, how to overcome issues and how to beat whatever stands in your way, it sets you up for the lessons of life and does no harm.
Set your child in front of a climbing frame and not only will they learn valuable life lessons but they will be getting the much needed exercise that will benefit their hearts, their lungs, their muscles, everything. It will keep them challenged, it will keep them fit and it will tire them out leading ot better sleeping patterns for children and parents alike.
It is simple steps like this that can not only keep your children close to home and away from danger but also keep them strong and fit and build them up with all they need for later life.
