Austin Texas Neighborhood Profiles: Brentwood

What is now known as the Brentwood neighborhood in Austin, Texas, was once just a pretty cotton farm. Then, in the late 1940s, the City of Austin annexed the farm, which was north of then city limits. The farm was next to Brentwood Elementary and the city used the land to establish the Brentwood neighborhood park and to open the school by 1951. Today, few would know Brentwood’s rural past without reading up about it, because today the neighborhood is thoroughly modern. In fact, Brentwood has become one of the most bustling and hip neighborhoods in Austin.

Today, Brentwood residents tend to be university professors or students (the university is only a very short commute away) or professionals. Nearby high-tech companies ensure that many engineers, high-tech workers and even politicians choose to call Brentwood home. All these diverse residents have no trouble finding the perfect housing in this neighborhood. Brentwood offers some apartments and a good selection of single-family homes as well. Many homes boast hardwood floors and many modern amenities.

Residents of this neighborhood enjoy quiet, tree-lined streets and charming homes that are long on attractive design. Prices in the Brentwood home market are strong and local real estate markets continue to grow. Many of the homes in the are located north of 45th, east of Lamar, west or Burnet, and south of Justin Lane. Lamar leads quickly to the university and Mo-Pac takes residents quickly South or North. Brentwood homes tend to be conveniently located, and most residents love the fact that they do not have to spend hours commuting every day. Many residents also enjoy views of the tree-lined creek which runs up Arroyo Seco.

There are many reasons to love living in Brentwood. The neighborhood is noted for native, old-fashioned hamburger diners and bars that date back to the 1950's. In fact, Brentwood has a number of independent and local businesses that are cultivated. The famous "keep Austin Weird" campaign encourages Austin’s homegrown businesses, and this slogan is one that Brentwood has certainly adopted!

Bicyclists and hikers enjoy Arroyo Seco and the Brentwood Park and Pool. If you love the outdoors, you are sure to enjoy these green spaces. You will also love The Violet Crown Festival held every May to celebrate local music, art, food, and residents. If you are ready to head indoors, try the Alamo Drafthouse on Anderson Lane, voted the number one movie theater in the country by Entertainment Weekly. Instead of heading to a super center, try the H-E-B on Burnet for your grocery needs. Be sure to try Top Notch, the burger joint you may recognize from the move “Dazed and Confused.” Threadgill's is another famous local eatery, as famous for its food as for the fact that Janis Joplin got her start here. If you want to head out of the community, try a day trip to the beautiful Lakeway along the scenic FM 2222.

If you have a family, Brentwood offers great recreation and great homes as well as great schools. The community boasts McCallum High School, with an excellent track record and a strong AP program, and Brentwood Elementary, which was awarded a Gold Performance Acknowledgment in writing and science. Private schools in the area include the prestigious Petite Ecole Internationale, which offers Montessori learning as well as a respected French immersion program.

Whether you have a family or are a young single, you are sure to love what Brentwood has to offer. This neighborhood simply offers the finest of Austin urban-suburban living. With environment consciousness and a casual, friendly attitude, this is a place you can come home to – no matter who you are.
