Tips on How You Can Look For Your Second Home While on Vacation in South Maui
Whether you are visiting South Maui for the first time or the tenth time you may be interested in looking for a second home. Let's face it, wouldn't everybody love to call this island paradise home? So why not turn a vacation into a house hunting adventure? There are ways you can juggle a home search and a holiday and have fun with just a little preparation and foresight.
Before you leave on vacation you can do some of the prep work at home and get a good idea of where you might want to concentrate your search and what types of properties you might want to look at. With the power of the internet you can do a bulk of this research on the internet. You can research the South Maui market and view the sales trends and current listings. You can view plat maps and floor plans. Want to see the layout of the Ho'Olei Wailea condominium development off Wailea Alanui Drive? No problem! You can go online and see the development, read about the features of the home and view pictures of the surrounding area.
Here are some tips on how to make sure you get the most out of a home-buying vacation:
1 - Contact a real estate professional before you leave for your vacation. You can search on the internet for real estate professionals who specialize in the Wailea and Makena areas. You will be able to find out a wealth of information on the condos and homes currently available. Make a phone call or send an email. Let the real estate agent know your vacation dates and your desire to see some properties while on vacation.
2 - Think like a resident. Don't do all the touristy things that are listed off in the Maui guidebook. First off, those books are written for vacationers - not someone who plans to live in Maui part time. Remember, as soon as you buy your second home you are no longer a tourist! Go grocery shopping, discover your favorite coffee shop, or find that dry cleaners that will come in handy from time to time.
3 - Talk to people. Just like when you bought your first home, you may have been inclined speak with your future neighbors. You should feel inclined to do so here as well. No one can tell you about Wailea and Makena areas better than your future fellow residents.
4 - Drive around. Get a feel for the various neighborhoods. In fact, consider renting some bikes! This will take you off the well-beaten paths and bring you to areas you may not otherwise discover. It may also uncover a hidden treasure of a property that might be the perfect second home. In some cases, you may want to contact your real estate agent to meet you. You may come across gated communities or areas where house numbers do not match unit numbers. That's what your real estate professional is for. He will be able to navigate through any choppy house hunting waters.
5 - Use a digital camera or ideally, a video camera, to document your home visits. As your real estate agent takes you to the properties be sure to take a camera with you! A few pictures of each home you visit, or even better - a video recording of your walk through of the home - will help you remember each home at the end of each day.
6 - Don't make every day a chore. You want to enjoy yourself and experience the island. Maui is well known for its beauty and outdoor activities, such as snorkeling at the underwater preserve just beyond Makena. Or perhaps you need some spa time at one of Wailea's reknowned resorts.
If you concentrate solely on the search for your second home, you may miss out on the fun a vacation should be. Ask your real estate agent about any local events happening while you are on the island. From outdoor markets to live music events, you don't want to miss out on the things that the residents of Maui enjoy.
Take advantage of the Wailea and Makena beaches and spend some time relaxing. Take a book to read, or just take a towel and a pillow and soak up the sun. Everyone needs some time to really take in a sunrise or sunset in Maui - it's that very relaxing paradise that draws people to buy a second home in Maui in the first place. It truly is possible to turn home shopping into a vacation when you do the shopping in South Maui.
