How to Turn New Year Resolutions into Real Results
It's nearly February!!!
How is that New Year resolution treating you?
Have you maintained you new commitment to lose weight so far?
Or Better yet, Have you even began an exercise and nutrition program?
I sure hope so
If you have started an exercise and nutrition program, are you like the majority of the New Years resolutioners out there who are now on the couch with a bag of potato chips and a box of twinkies?
If not great! Then you are on your way to success - a New YOU for 2009!
Or are you having some frustrations because you have not yet seen any results - like most of us.
You see, over the years I have seen this very thing happen. Throughout my career I have been around many health clubs and have witnessed the people who desperately want to lose ugly body fat, but struggle to get results. On the other hand I have also seen and personally worked with the complete opposite!
So how can one person struggle so much with their weight loss while others simply melt the fat away?
Simple - They get the help of a coach. In this case it may be a bit biased but that coach is me. And I'll tell you that I have provided a countless number of people the help and path they have needed to guarantee their results. Now, make no mistake about it, a big reason for such great results is because our integrated rapid fat loss training and nutrition system is second to none.
I have put the time and research into finding the Fat loss secret, and I have had hundreds of people as real world case studies to prove that our system flat out works. But, today I am going to share something more powerful; something that must be set in place before you can even start to think about following a fitness program.
So, let's just get right to it. What do you think is the real secret behind my client success?
I'll bet it's not what you think is!
No, it's not my training and nutrition system (even though it is a major contributing factor of the puzzle).
The secret is MindSet. It's pointless if someone wants to lose weight but is unwilling to start it AND stick to it, right? So the Secret to your Fat loss Resolutions success is finding the motivation to achieve your goals.
Now I know what you are thinking - you are ready and willing to put the time and effort in, and you are certainly ready to start losing fat, so what about the best workout program to do? What about the best diet to go on? (more on this stuff later)
Now that we are ready and willing, we need to talk about goal setting. Once we harness the power of setting goals we can develop the master plan.
Here is your goal setting action plan;
Step One- The Why: Why do you want to do this?
This is where you need to look in the mirror and ask yourself why do I want to do this? I ask this very question to all of my clients the very first time I see them. This is the response I will get 90% of the time;
Well, I just want to get healthy and lose weight I guess.
Duh, but why, I'll ask again.
I know they want to lose weight and be healthy, I mean who doesn't, but really WHY do they want to do this? You need to figure out what is going to motivate you to get off your Butt out of bed at 5am and get you to the gym. You need to have a vision, a specific reason as to why you want to lose weight.
So, what you need to do is dig deep and find out the real reason why you want to do this;
Maybe so you can run around and play with your kids, or so you can be smoking hot on your next spring break trip. Whatever, the reason find the WHY and getting up day after day at 5am will be a cake walk.
Step Two- The what and When: What do you want to accomplish and when do you want to accomplish it by?
Now we know the why, so we are ready for the actual what and when;
The what in my opinion in this case is simple - LOOK BETTER NAKED!!! But, technically we need to track and monitor progress, so here is how we do it at Optimal Performance;
1.) Scale Weight: This is by far the least important goal, but it gives a number that's worth tracking. Though body fat percentage would be a much better method of tracking progress, it is just not accurate enough, and to be honest, people just want that darn number to go down (fyi - if you follow our guidelines your scale weight will inevitably go down).
The key is to take your initial weight before you start and then not weighing more than every 2 weeks. Any more than that and you view your weight as being stagnate or too slow for your liking.
In addition, in order to keep the variables the same you need to use the same scale, weigh yourself at the same time, and wear the same cloths every time you weigh in. Note even then that darn scale may not always like you. There are just too many other physiological factors involved.
2.) Dress/Pant Size: This is probably the most simple and effective unused method of tracking whether or not you look better. I think we'll all agree that if you are dropping dress and/or pant sizes that you will be looking better, right? Your best bet is to also select one dress or one pair of pants that you really want to get into since that is the true end goal in mind.
3.) Digital Pictures: Pictures don't lie, that's the bottom line. If you want to look better, what better way is there to assess this than pictures? I cannot begin to tell you how important this is. Taking a before picture is essentially your proof. Also if you take a before picture and tell at least your closest friends, it will give you more commitment and motivation right?
Step Three- Having a plan, Following the Plan and Preparing for Roadblocks
Now that we know what you want to accomplish, it's time create a plan, follow that plan, and not let any obstacles get in your way.
As far as obstacles the biggest thing I hear all the time is that people are too busy and tired and don't have enough time to get their workouts in or make their meals. BS! I If you want it enough, you'll find time for that. There is hidden time throughout the day and week that can be freed up if you re-prioritize. Just remember the WHY - that should keep you on track.
Another big road block is alcohol. I've come to realize people like to drink and unfortunately alcohol is probably the worst thing you can have while trying to lose fat. Again, you have a choice - do you want to lose that ugly belly or have get blitzed? Remember, once you achieve your goal(s), alcohol can be added back in with moderation. But know this, lean people just don't get wasted unless they are genetic freaks. Low to zero alcohol consumption is needed if you want to look your best year round and that's a fact.
One last roadblock we need to cover is a biggie. Emotional and boredom eating. Boredom eating means just that, eating to fill up dead time when you have nothing better to do. The best way to deal with this is, you guessed it, get off your butt & do something!.
Emotional eating is basically using food to cope with stress or to reward for accomplishment. Food is not unlike drugs or alcohol in this regard, it can be very addictive. There is no quick fix for emotional eating other than avoiding trigger situations (bars, parties, etc.) and trigger foods (starches, sugars, fast food, etc.) in the short term to break bad habits.
At the end of the day, whether your roadblocks are very individual or if they fall in line with the general roadblocks our clients encounter on a regular basis, the key is to be honest about them and to plan and prepare for them. And that's where social support and accountability come into play. The clients who have had the most success with us have undergone their transformation with the support of other friends or family members.
This is so critical, especially since most of the poor food and drinking choices that sabotage one's progress occur on the weekend, when most people hang out with their friends and family. If they are committed with you and your goal to get fit and look better, you can put yourself in a much better position to realize the success your desire and deserve. The last thing anybody needs is sabotage or peer pressure from those closest to you, so get them on board and get them on board early.
