Is The Gym An Obstacle To Muscle Building or Fat Loss?

Most who pursue muscle mass gains or fat loss feel that joining a local gym is a prerequisite, and so, following a rather calorie friendly December, thousands crowd local gyms, signing up for a 3+ year membership, believing that they've just made the initial leap towards a muscle building or fat loss transformation. But if we analyze the number of people who actually continue attending the gym after their initial contract signing, we find that the once motivated fitness enthusiast fueled with zeal for a significant transformation suddenly fails to walk through the gym's front door as February approaches.

Most believe that laziness is the natural enemy that prevents most from pursuing a pattern of muscle gain or fat loss consistency, and never consider whether in fact the gym environment itself may obstruct desire for many, eventually causing a large number of men and women to quit the pursuit of muscle gain or fat loss completely.

Yet, how could this be? Is it possible for the gym to reduce motivation, when in fact such an environment should be conducive towards achieving results? The true reasons will be found within the first few workouts, and clearly becomes one of the main reasons why many lose their fondness for gym attendance long before producing significant results.

Imagine you are ready for an intense weight lifting workout session, and you encounter one or more friends who decide to train at the same time as you. What will likely happen now? Will the group experience the best weight lifting and cardiovascular workout session of the year, or will the next hour that follows focus upon discussing last night's Monday Night Football showdown? Let's instead assume you attend the gym and happen not to locate any acquaintances, but as you scan the territory, immediately sense that each machine you are planning to use is occupied, with a 15 minute wait for each. Do you think this will lead to an effective weight lifting workout session, or encourage a visit to the neighborhood drive thru to try and gorge the anger away?

Oh, and let's not neglect the most many additional excuses to abandon the scheduled workout for a day, such as bad weather (two feet of snow might make traveling the highway difficult), automobile breakdown (a flat tire always interferes with melting a spare tire!), and traffic (wouldn't want to be late for a date with the TV)! Some may believe that these obstacles cannot occur regularly, but once momentum is hampered, and a workout is skipped, the brain becomes far more lenient of the next skipped weight lifting workout session, and this negative attitude will soon lead to a brand new habit, one which is much more entertaining; couch sitting, without the distraction of a gym visit for your weight training workout session.

So, what is the alternative? I perform my weight training at home, having gained over 60 pounds of new muscle and lost 50 pounds of body fat, without use of a gym, proving that neither muscle building nor fat loss requires waiting in line for machines or spending large amounts of money on expensive bodybuilding gym fees. In fact, my muscle gain and fat loss success was achieved in my own basement, with inexpensive weight training equipment, and I was able to produce far more consistency with my weight training workout routine than most who must combat the inconvenient gym environment, specifically because I am in control of my surroundings, and can eliminate distractions that obstruct my ability to perform my weight training workout routine.

This is not to say that achieving a bodybuilding caliber physique or producing consistent fat loss is impossible through gym training, as many with such memberships achieve very impressive results, but for those who have the option to invest in some basic weight lifting equipment, I believe doing so is extremely convenient, offers a controlled environment, and is far less expensive over a several year period than joining a local gym facility. Achieving success in muscle gain or fat loss is in large part due to mental concentration, a factor which suffers greatly when subjected to an unpredictable group of circumstances, and this is why I have constantly opted for training at home, and achieved very impressive muscle building and fat loss results specifically because I have constantly been able to proceed with my weight training workouts in a methodical fashion.

Don't frown upon performing your weight lifting workout sessions at home until you've experienced the inconveniences of attending a gym, but if you decide to sign up for a local gym, make sure to avoid signing a long term membership until you have regularly trained for at least two months and have proven to yourself that the distractions and obstacles will not interfere with remaining faithful to your weight lifting workout plan.
